Berger .308 185 gr. VLD Bullet

Has anyone used the above bullet for hunting? A friend gave me a box. I thought they were target bullets but learned they are hunting bullets.

They are great target and varmint bullets. But from what I've seen I wouldn't use them for anything else. My step-uncle got some and shot 3 deer with them before he gave up on them. They disintegrate and cause terrible meat loss. There are better bullets for big game IMO.

Re: Berger .308 185 gr. VLD Bullet

Thanks

I thought they were a target bullet. I loaded up 5 yesterday and went to the range. I shot a 3/4" grp. That was encouraging so I decided to do some more research and develop a load for them. I started reading and in Cabela's catalog they say it is a hunting load and it "sheds its weight as shrapnel". I thought that can't be good for deer hunting but maybe Iím missing something.

I will use them for chucks and rocks.

Re: Berger .308 185 gr. VLD Bullet

The Problem with Berger Bullets is people get them mixed up. First the Hybrid is not a hunting bullet. The VLD'scome in hunting and target versions. Sometimes people think they can use a light bullet in a Magnum and shoot close. They can't be ran superfast with a light bullet and shot close, they will blow up. I have had a lot of success with them and all one shot kills. They are a real accurate bullet also. Matt

Oh they were definitely one shot kills. He used the 185 in .308. I still have 1/2 box he loaded for me that I only use at the range or on groundhogs. They're great for that.
The 1st one he hit in the pocket and the exit hole was shredded, she dropped on the spot. The 2nd one ran 20 yds. Quartering away again shot in the pocket, never made it through the opposite shoulder, but he lost that whole shoulder because of it. The 3rd I wasn't present for but he said it was as bad as the 1st 2.
I've personally never shot a deer with them after seeing this. I have shot groundhogs and they look like when I shot a squirrel with my 17 HMR.

When they don't work like they are supposed to they want them back to test. If you contact them and tell them what it does they will send you other bullets. They stand behind their products. Matt
