300 RUM or 338 Edge??

Question of the day for long range hunting. Elk, Bear, any long range game. Which do you prefer and why?
I understand both are large shoulder breakers, just interested in everyones opinion!

Re: 300 RUM or 338 Edge??

i have thought about lapua but i think you need a special action. thats why i thought either 300 RUM or 338 edge. and i think the edge is faster than the 338 RUM?

It is a bit faster, still the 338 RUM is a heck of a long range performer. Also, you should be able to build a Lapua on the same action as the RUM.

Re: 300 RUM or 338 Edge??

All of them are big bangers.. I have the standard .338 WM and have shot aRUM a few times..to be honest they are about as much as I can take of the bench for about 5 shots and I"m done. All of the cartridges you mentioned are almost the ultimate in long range sniping and hunting. I've read a lot about the Sierra 300 grain match king as being a great bullet in all of the ones you mentioned. Can't beat that big bullet when you need penetration and killing power at the edge of what we want to shoot em'...however they are not for the faint of heart.

Re: 300 RUM or 338 Edge??

I agree i think 338 is the way to go. I will probably go with the edge. seems like a good compromise from the 338 lapua.

anyone know how the recoil on these are with a good muzzle break?

Re: 300 RUM or 338 Edge??

I shoot a 300 Tomahawk made by the late Ray Romain. It is a 300 RUM with the shoulder blown out.It has a muzzle brake on it and you could shoot it all day as long as you have good hearing protection. They are LOUD!!!
