Re: 6.5 x 284

It is an accurate caliber and used alot by 1k bench shooters.140/142gr bullet on the heavy side most run @2850fps low node and a bit over 3k high node.
similar to 260 or 260AI.
i
some will call it a 1k deer cartridge but my 6.5x47 runs that bullet at 2850 and i set my limit on whitetail bucks at not much over 500yds! on the 6.5x284 high side i would say 600-700yds IF IF IF IF IF IF IF shall i say it again?
He learns to use it at those ranges. dont think you can get a turret to match the bullet and thats all i have to do.
in the right hands it can be used to 1k on deer but thats pushing it.

A "clip" is a clip, aka Def: a device, typically flexible or worked by a spring, for holding an object or objects together or in place.
a "Magazine" is a magazine aka Def: a chamber for holding a supply of cartridges to be fed automatically to the breech of a gun.

so a "clip" holds the "magazine" in place. get it?

Re: 6.5 x 284

I used to use one for ground hogs pushing it really hard at almost 3100FPS with the 140 bergers I had it out to 1165 with no problems. Deer "white tail" I would have to say you can do 1K if your running it hot and have a good scope range finder and program.

As far as calibers are concerned it's a 6.5mm bullet vs a 7mm bullet. The 6.5-284 is a necked down version of the 284 Winchester. The 284 Win. isn't terribly dissimilar from the 7mm08.

Re: 6.5 x 284

A comparable caliber to the 6.5x284 is the .260 rem. but you won't get as much velocity in the .260, a 7-08 is a good cartridge but has more recoil than a .260 rem. When I shot high power silhouette I had a 7-08 and a .260 rem. and I liked the .260 better because it had less recoil.

Re: 6.5 x 284

yup to the above, lets forget the 6.5x284 as you have now a 7-08.
short action vs long action also!
6.5x284 can be run in a SA single shot
are we talking the young son has a 7-08 and the 15yr old wants a 6.5x284?and what is better??? put down the cards.
the question is changing?
a 6.5x284 is not a 7-08 at all!

Re: 6.5 x 284

6.5x284 is a reloaders cartridge. If I didn't have reloading equipment I would go 7mm-08

Re: 6.5 x 284

Go get yourself a Savage long range rifle already chambered for the 6.5x284-Norma..won't break the bank and for big game hunting it's all you'll ever need. One complaint for competition shooting with this cartridge is barrel life, but you won't be shooting that many rounds in order to wear out the throat area in a lifetime. The cartridge burns lots of powder in a small bore and I've seen accuracy needed for competition with some barrels go away at 700 rounds but for a hunting rifle you won't shoot 700 rounds in lifetime. Also if your looking around on the used racks BEWARE that there are some slight difference in the reamers that cut the chambers for new barrels on old actions. Some used the original .284 Winchester brass and some the new norma brass and they are NOT the same. I have a fiend who set some 1000 yard match records and could not make the new norma brass work under any condition and he uses only the OLD .284 brass which is rarer than hen's teeth that are filled, so beware if your looking to buy something used...stick with the Savage long range hunter for around $500 and you won't go wrong.
