Favorite long range hunting bullet?

Whats yours? I use a amax for ghogs. Orginally loaded berger but had problems because of the long throat in my rifle. Plus i had problems buying them. What is your favorite for small med and large game.

Re: Favorite long range hunting bullet?

So far I like Bergers...I am hoping to try the Barnes LRX bullets this spring/summer timeframe.

Re: Favorite long range hunting bullet?

I have only hunted big game for LR hunting and use the 300 Smk out of my 338's.

I have used some Cutting Edge Bullets.......they are a PA company and offer some pretty cool products....

It is worth checking them out for any long range application....

How does the smk do hunting? Do they expand reliably?

Re: Favorite long range hunting bullet?

I never saw any indication that they were expanding in the woodchucks I've shot and Sierra specifically states that they shouldn't be used for hunting purposes because of the heavy jacket. I noticed (or perceived) more ricochet as well. Now that's not to say that they can't kill critters; they just don't make a mess of them.

In my experience, the Berger hunting VLD'S display substantially better terminal performance than the SMK's.

Re: Favorite long range hunting bullet?

When i was long-range hunting (before joining a cabin)we used the same hollow point bullets that we shot at the 1000 yd. matches. With the modern technology what bullets are people using for long range deer hunting currently? Coming out of a long retirement going back to long range matches and hunting after years of rimfire shooting matches.
