Any good 150 or 165 grain bullet. I like Nosler Partition and Barnes but they are expensive.

Are you talking about long range hunting for Whitetails? The 165 / 168 is the favored weight for long range.

I use Hornady 180RN, most to all my hunting is brush and semi open woods. My son use Hornady 165 BTSP, he hunts some fields, and more open timber sometimes, so wants something that shoots a little flatter. Both are hand loads.

Does your question pertain to the 308 cartridge, or to 308 as a caliber?
First id doubt you would find many serious long range hunters who don't reload.
Id also doubt you would find many using a 308 cartridge. It would work well up to a point for hunting, but there would be better choices.
If I were going to be using one, id personaly be using 150 to 165 gr bullets and limiting my shots to a max of about 700 yards.
Id feel the same about a 30/06.
That said, most of the practice shooting at our camp is at rocks with 308s.

I got a good deal on a Bolt action 308 a few years ago.
Most of my Hunting was with a 270.
Sighted the 308 in with Rem. Core Lock 150 Gr. PSP.
Recently bought a box of Hornady Superformance in 150 Gr. SST's.
Did't know if I should consider steping up to a heavier bullet or not.
Where I hunt most shots would be well under 200 Yds.

Under 200 yards any good quality 150, 165 or 180 will do.

As someone who shoots a 308. I would say 168 for whitetail deer? But your question has more questions than it does answers.
Determine type of shooting "long or short range"
Open country or wooded woodlands.
Doesn't take a large caliber to kill whitetail but you chosen a great round.
Don't get discoraged but take the advise as a learning opportunity.
When I hunt, I tend to use quality ammo that I practice with during off season. When shooting to just kill paper target. I may use other ammo since cost is not cheap. Anyway. That's my .2 cents.
