need a recommendationee

I am building a 260rem dual purpose rig. Just target shooting to 1000, ghog to about same and deer to 600 or so. I need a scope and ring setup. Im looking to spend no more than 350 on scope with a max power of atleast 16x. I have looked at vortex, millet, mueller, burris, nikon, bushnell, and leupold. Im just very undecided and need help so im looking for some opinions and first hand experience. Thanks in advance

Re: need a recommendationee

Of those choices I would go with Leupold (used) or Vortex. If you are going to dial and not use a hold over reticle. You are probably going to have to spend more $$. $350 doesn't get you much in GOOD repeatable optics. Check cameralandny.com regularly they always are running sales in Vortex, Meopta, zeiss, Swarovski ect. Plus they have free shipping and no tax to PA.

Re: need a recommendationee

I'll second Hankster on the cameralandny.com. Check out their sample/demo pages as they have some terrific deals on there and none of the scopes have been mounted on a gun or hunted with- just show samples. I have been going with Vortex of late with no complaints. Have plenty of Nikon and Leupold also which have never failed me.

Re: need a recommendationee

I think you have caviar tastes and a pizza budget.
If you are going to shoot 1000 yards, you better plan on spending $1000+ just for the scope and another $200 or so on mounts.
Maybe you can find some cheap Millet scope mounts for your rifle, but the scope is still going to cost you big bucks.
In your price range, about the only scope I can think of is the Bushnell 4200 Elite.

You can get into the Vortex Viper line for $550 or so. They have been doing very well at longer ranges.

Re: need a recommendationee

I would look for a used 1" tube Leupold 6.5x20 or 24x with target knobs they can be had for about $400.00 to $500.00. We used these scopes for years on our 1000.00 yard rifles, we also used shimmed (20 thousand) Leupold standard high rings and bases and has no trouble getting out to about 1200 yards.

Re: need a recommendationee

I will second what the others in this thread have said. For shooting up to 1000 yards, you are going to have to be adjusting your turrets a lot. A sub $350 variable power scope that has at least 16x max power just isn't going to have accurate, repeatable adjustments for that kind of shooting, not to mention glass quality. A jump up to $550 will be helpful, and put you into a much better category of glass, but still is not optimal. If you consider changing a requirement or 2, you can meet that budget without issue.

The only sub $350 scope that I would consider acceptable for that would be the SWFA 10x42, which is a fixed power, but the turrets will do the same thing every time, and you will be able to shoot at 100 then dial in up to 1000 and back down and maintain perfect tracking.

for your $550 budget, you have some options there, and the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x444 is about the best in class for that budget and that kind of shooting.

Have you considered what mount and rings you will go with? what action are you using?
