1000 Yard Whitetail Gun

As the subject says I'm looking to build a custom 1000 yard rifle for whitetail. What calibers do you guys suggest? I'm not looking for a barrel burner but don't mind being a litle overkill for the situation. I already have a 700 action to base this off of but MAY chose a completely different action. I"m looking at, since i've saved, investing in 2500-3000 in just the gun so I have a strong budget.

7 STW
7 RUM
.300 RUM
.300 Wby
.30/.378 Wby
.338 RUM

Just a few I would consider. I'd probably end up doing the STW since I already have loaded for it and have a very deep appreciation for its capabilities.

The .338 is overkill but a solid 1000 yard performer. Just a tad more expensive per shot. Whichever you choose I would encourage you to consider handloading.

Re: 1000 Yard Whitetail Gun

I will be handloading, I currently do for my 300 weatherby. Anyhow, Here is what i'm leaning towards even though its overkill.
338 Lapua Mag.
Mcmillian G30 Push Feed Action or Rem 700 Action
PTG Bottom Metal with Detachable Mag
Mcmillian A-5 Stock
Krieger Sendero Taper Barrel
Jewel Trigger
Burris Zee Rings 30mm
NightForce NXS Scope 5.5 x 22 x 56
Cerakote the entire gun

Sounds like a man with a plan. Do you have anywhere to let the gun stretch its legs at 1000 yards?

Re: 1000 Yard Whitetail Gun

I do have the distance. I'm surrounded by strip cuts that extend that distance, 993 yards to be exact. I've killed out to 650 with my 300 weatherby but know my optics beyond that aren't worth the "risk" in my opinion.

Re: 1000 Yard Whitetail Gun

Sounds like great fun. The longest I have found around me to shoot it 200 yards at the local gun clubs. I wouldnt know what to do if I had 500 yards as an option. Have fun and enjoy your new gun when you get all the parts put together.

You may be better served by selecting an XL action with a bolt face large enough for the .338lm instead of having the boltface opened up on the actions you listed.

You should also consider an action and bottom metal for the DBM that can accommodate CIP length loads. I think the g30 can only get CIP length as a BDL not DBM

If you are looking to shoot the 300gr bullets consider the twist of your Kreiger carefully. JMO
