new gun

Ok guys i am looking to build a custom rig mostly for punching paper or hitting steel but also deer and maybe an occasional elk. I dont want any super barrel burner just something economical and sufficient. Im leaning to a 280rem shooting 168 berger vld's. Just wondering if you guys had any other suggestions?

Re: new gun

I was looking for the same thing and settled on the 260 Rem. 6.5 caliber bullets are incredibly "slippy" and will reach waaaay out there. Also, the 260 features low recoil and brass that's readily available.
Whatever you choose....good luck with your build!

Re: new gun

What bullets are you guys using in the 6.5? along with barrel length and twist? A 26" with a 9 twist?

Re: new gun

Is a 6.5 legal for western elk hunting? Thats my biggest reason of wanting a 280 rem ackley improved. I handload so the oddball calibers are no big deal.

I believe that most, if not all, western states would allow the 6.5mm based cartridges. As a disclaimer though; I've never been out west elk hunting, so my words aren't gospel.

I don't have any first hand experience with the .280AI, but many people speak highly of it.
