What tire PSI to run on a long road trip ??

Gonna take my Silverado on a 3000+ mile interstate road trip here in a few weeks. I'd like to put my summer tires on. But I'm gonna need max traction when I get where I'm going.

I'm running stock height (255/75R/17) BFG Mud Terrain KM's...................same tire that comes factory on the Wrangler Unlimited. The rolling resistance on these things is really high. They drop my MPG by at least 2 MPG over my summer Wrangler SRA's.

Any suggestions as to what PSI I oughta run on the way out and back ?? I'm thinking at least 40 PSI. Don't know if even more would be better. I won't be loaded heavy.

what you don't want to do is over inflate to the point your rounding out and losing your contact patch.
at 3000mls you will get bad wear.esp with a mud compound.

i'd chalk my tires and do a chalk test

if I had to wing it... not knowing the weight difference between a silverado and a JK
as a wrangler owner,
KMs typically run at @30-32 psi to pass a chalk test
the factory specs @35 psi cold
account for 2-3 psi increase after the tires come up to temp.
mainly due to the tire compound I wouldn't push past 37-38psi cold
you'll end up almost 10psi over where kms like to run.

i'd also rotate them before the return trip

I run my General Grabber 265/70/18s at 40 on the front and 45 on the back all the time. I also have a tuner and I run 89 octane, on the highway I get around 16mpg.

How much difference did the tuner make on your MPG ??

About 1.5 mpg. Its a diablo tuner. I have it set on fuel efficiency, and adjusted my speedo. I bought a k/a cold air intake thats takes almost a second off the 0 to sixty times, havent had time to put it on yet. Im expecting an increase in mpg with that as well. I will tell you that with the Kumho tires I had on before these, I was getting another 1.5 mpg, running 87 octane but they werent as aggressive. Now if I could find a bigger gas tank to install Id be a happy camper. BTW my truck is a 14 crew, 5.3L standard bed with a 4" lift and a high rise cap.

Now have Hancook ATMs on my 2014 Silverado. Got a bit better MPG with the OEM Goodyears, but they were worthless in mud/snow the first year they were on there.

45 PSI is the max inflation on the Hancooks. Usually run 40 in the fronts, 42 in the rears. Good wear so far.

Some folks' learnin' curves just look like circles...3A Camp/also hunt 4B

Something else you may want to consider is getting an alignment before going that many miles . When I changed tires the time before last , I thought I did really well getting 42,000 miles before needing a new set . When the tire dealer took the old set off , he showed me the inside edge was nearly bald . He of course recommended an alignment . I asked the alignment shop how it could be out , since I've never had problems with any steering or suspension parts . He said my 5 year old ( at the time ) trucks suspension has settled out since it was new from the factory . Metal fatigue over time . I now get my truck aligned every 3-4 years for around $50.00 . Cheap tire insurance .

Thanks for all the input, fellers !!

I'll have to look to see what the max inflation on the KM's is. But I think Ill plan to bump the rears up to at least 45 PSI. Figure I'll let them down a bit once I'm out there for better traction then put them back up for the run home.

Also thinking about getting a brand new set so I don't have to listen to the ones that are on it now the whole trip. Still lots of tread left. But starting to get a bit noisy.

I'm just danged near exactly 1000 lbs. heavier than a JK............. 5300 on the Silverado vs 4300 on the Unlimited.
