Unified/CWD

Public meeting on CWD planned | News, Sports, Jobs - Altoona Mirror

The Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania are set to hold a public meeting at the East Freedom Fire Hall 9:30 a.m. March 9. The scheduled speaker is John Eveland wildlife biologist and ecologist who is assisting the statewide grassroots sportsmen’s organization with its chronic wasting disease project.

Blair County landowners recently turned away U.S. Department of Agriculture sharpshooters from their property and halted the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s plan to reduce deer populations for a study about whether that could slow the spread of chronic wasting disease.

Eveland supports the landowners’ effort and said the Game Commission’s deer management policies are not based on current science.

“If you indiscriminately kill deer or eliminate completely out of desperation, you will obviously stop the spread, but you don’t cure anything because the bacteria that causes the disease remains in the soil and is infectious for long periods of time,” Eveland said in a telephone interview Friday. “There has to be a different approach.”

For well over a year, Eveland has been collaborating with Louisiana State University professor Frank Bastian who announced in February that he found the cause of CWD is not a warped protein as is widely accepted but a type of bacteria called a spiroplasma. With that discovery, Bastian believes he can develop the first vaccine for the disease within three years if he has funding.

“I will be discussing two approaches — Dr. Bastian’s vaccines and the diagnostic test kit he will be developing for hunters. And secondly, changes to deer management policy in the interim that can be effective without destroying the deer population,” Eveland said.

The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. March 9 at the Freedom Township Fire Hall, 139 Municipal St., East Freedom.

The doors will open at 8:30 a.m., said Phil Wagner, president of the Unified Sportsmen of Penn-sylvania.

The fire hall can seat about 300 people, maybe, Wagner said.

“Seats are first come, first served,” he said.

“We are hoping the result is just to get the word out to people in the area who didn’t know the Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania existed and that we are working on research for a CWD cure by supporting Dr. Bastian,” he added.

Wagner said Bastian needs $300,000 over next three years for the vaccine project. The Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania signed a partnership agreement with LSU stating the group would help raise funds.

The Unified Sportsmen holding a public meeting, now that is a hoot. It appears they are still trying to be relevant. What they know would fit on the head of a pin and still have room for twice as much. They were a pathetic joke when they started being led by jokes and they have not changed.

Prion - Bacteria, Prion - Bacteria. I have listened to numerous PhDs talk about the root cause. Most are on the Prion ship, but Eveland and Bastian have a different idea. Did Bastian publish a paper, was it vetted through peer review ? I am not a microbiologist or biochemist, so I cannot intelligently comment on the research, BUT I would say $300K is a small price to pay IF they are right.

Lets continue to fund and explore both theories until we eliminate one of them. At the same time I think we should reduce the deer herds in the effected areas, Less deer means slower dispersal and slower spread of the disease. A valid test kit would be beneficial.

This CWD is getting dangerously close to the Elk herd. And we need to keep the politicians out of it. They will just screw it up.

Nobody else has been able to replicate Bastians results. So his "Research" seems questionable at this time. Getting the Unified Sportsmen to back your case does nothing for your credibility. Well, nothing good anyway.

Lines of evidence:
1. There is not an immune response to CWD like other disease agents4.

When a foreign virus or bacteria enters the body, the immune system starts to fight it. There is inflammation and fever. The body produces antibodies to the disease agent. We do not see these processes in CWD.

If Sunday hunting was not already illegal, who among us would not laugh at making it so?

Every legitimate scientist in the world agrees that CWD and related diseases are caused by prions, rogue proteins, except these two beauties who think they may be bacteria, Eveland is an idiot who wanted to work for the PGC but couldn't get it done so he began a campaign against them, I don't know anything about the other deluded individual. Eveland is the USP's pet biologist and their go to guy what they want to someone dispute the PGC research, which says all you need to know about him. Set your money on fire before you give it to those clowns for their half baked research.

Exactly.

Anybody with a lick of sense should be able to see from the research done that when you have killed all the bacteria and made sure their is no DNA or even RNA left and the contagion still exists, it is not a bacteria.

IMHO, Those folks are no better than the witch doctors in Tiajuana preying on the last ditch hopes of terminal cancer patients or maybe even worse as even if they are right, their opposition to herd reductions in those areas will only spread the disease and make it harder to treat.

My thoughts are that CWD in our herd is like Cancer in the body. At the very least we need to slow It's spread and those charlatans at the USP are saying no, no no, Don't listen to modern science and slow it down, us Quacks in Tiajuana are promising you a cure. Just send us your money.
