WWII hand grenade

OK, I got by butt chewed out pretty good by my Battery MGS and the Gunny from Ezplosive Ordinace Disposal so I know how stupid I was in picking this up. So here is the story;

Its 1981 and I'm a Marine stationed on Okinawa on Camp Foster which is where the main Marine landing occurred. I buy a cheap Whites metal detector at the PX and head to the jungle off base. I explore caves used during the war and find Japanese rifle brass and some yen coins. I also found part of a rusted american helmet and boot leather. I wish I had kept that stuff, but I just pitched it. Finally a get a strong reading on top of a small knob. I gingerly excavate using a screw driver and suddenly realize its an american "pineapple" hand grenade. I ever so slowly clean all around it untill its sitting on a piller of dirt. It still had the fuse and pin in it and it is severly rusted. I take mt e-tool and fling it over the hill figuring that if bouncing off the rocks doesn't make it blow, it should be safe. It doesnt blow and I find it and take it back to the barracks and put it in my wall locker. After a couple days and good advise from my battery armor, I call EOD and he comes, chews my [censored], and takes it.
Here it is. Only a picture and a memory

Re: WWII hand grenade

If I recall the grenade classes from ITR at Stone Bay in 1970, the filler for the old WWII grenades was black Powder. Comp B was use with the newer models. That BP can be verrrrry dangerous as it can get wet and then dry out and be just as explosive as it was when it was made. You're a lucky guy.

Good night Chesty, wherever you are......
