Question on cleaning coins

I just found some old coins and was wondering what everyone uses to clean them off, that won't hurt the coin? I can't read the dates, some are hard to tell whether its a wheat penny or newer. All I have done is soapy water and a soft brush.

Re: Question on cleaning coins

For copper, ketchup and a soft cloth works.

When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!

Re: Question on cleaning coins

Iíve soaked Wheaties and Indians in hydrogen peroxide that is first heated in the microwave to near boiling. You should check the coins every 30 minutes or so.

It usually loosens most of the crusting and then use a wooden toothpick to get into the crevasses.

Iíve also soaked them in olive oil if theyíre not too crusted-over.
