Gold prospecting.

I do not want YOUR spot, just info. I interested in doing some gold panning........can any be found in PA? I don't expect a commerical operation just time along a stream with the possibility of finding some. If there is little or no possibility of finding any then why waste my time? So basically I'm asking if anyone has done this successfully? Is there an organization that I might find helpful with this idea? Thanks in advance.

Freedom is NOT free!

Re: Gold prospecting.

do a google search for pa gold prospectors. I found a map a few years ago online that was from a group in the state of where they had found gold in some streams and even the susquehanna.

Re: Gold prospecting.

yes, it can be found in PA. I would suggest a sluice box. you can go through a lot more material than just panning.

Southeastern PA has some probable spots to find some color.

I would imagine there's some glacial remnants in NW PA, too.

True of the sluice box............

Re: Gold prospecting.

One of the gold prospector publications had state game lands listed as a place to go, if you read thet don't do it, it is not legal.

Technically, I suppose, a fellow COULD pan on an SGL. He'd just have to put back any gold he found.

Catch & release gold panning.

Re: Gold prospecting.

At least until a few years ago, Spring Valley Park in Southern York County had gold panning lessons in the stream there every summer. According to some old county records some gold was mined in SE york County. In early colonial days a fellow had a mine somewhere in the western end of SGL 211. Author Conrad Richter, from Pine Grove made references to it in his book, The Light in the Forest. They call the area the Gold Mine and Gold Mine Road. I would think where the streams flow off the SGL would be a good place to look. Either on the west end at Dauphin PA or up near High Bridge Reservoir. With permission of the landowners of course.
