caught my first steelhead today with my fly rod and fly that I tied. Supposed to represent an emerald shiner. It was a male and 22 1/2" long. I had another one on but it either broke my tippet or my surgeons knot came undone. I had the Walnut creek to myself maybe the rain kept other people from fishing.
Great job. DO NOT BE AFFRAID TO USE NYMPHS UP THERE. Last year I had caught the majority of my fish on size 16-14 pheasant tails, and copper johns. Streamers are very effective on fresh chrom especially the emerald shiner but the fish that have been in there a little while will crush these small bugs. I had success on some large stone flies as well.
Congrats on the steelhead! I am not sure what is more of an accomplishment; the first steelhead or having Walnut Creek to yourself. Enjoy that moment, you may never experience that ever again!
Congrats. Easy to get hooked on steelhead after you land the first one.
