Using your smartphone to get in shape

Anybody have any good apps they use to help workout. I bought "Couch to 5K" for my iPhone. I am still in my first week but so far I like it.

Re: Using your smartphone to get in shape

I "upgraded" that Couch to 5K, to the 10K program. It rocks. I am basically on the last week of the 5K program now, heading into the second half.

Week 4 was tough for me, I was sick, didn't finish the intervals, etc so I had to redo that week. Then Week 7 was also tough as well. I had to redo that week twice before I could run the full intervals. I'm running for 30 mins straight now though, and about to attempt 35 minutes later on today!

It's been great though! Looking back on the first few weeks now, I'm amazed at how far I've come! I'm sure you will be the same way! It's a great way to ease into it, and make a habit out of running!

I just put on Pandora, grab the dog, and start the app as I walk out the door. So easy.

Check out myfitnesspal as well if you want to track what you are eating. That has been real easy to use as well.

Re: Using your smartphone to get in shape

Thanks for the info, I track through weightwatchers now and it's been working. I actually love this App my legs aren't real happy about it though

Can I ask what kind of shape you were in when you started? I am literally starting from the couch. I haven't ran in years.

I also bought "Your Gym" for I think $1.99 two days ago but It's not that great in my opinion two hard for me to find places to do the exercises. It does get great reviews though it's just not for me. I was hoping to find a decent workout for dumbbells but there aren't two many apps for that.

Good luck on your 10k that is great!

Thanks again for the info.

I use a free running log app. for my IPad , that tallies your total miles, gives your average pace, and total hours. It also lets you log what type of run, route name, and level of intensity. Nothing fancy, but practical, and free.

Re: Using your smartphone to get in shape

No worries jk... I was the same as you. Just stick with it... I just finished week 8! 35 minutes pretty much straight. I keep getting to the top of this hill and then have to walk for about 30 seconds or so before I get back into it. I think I have to change up my route or something to break that habit.

One word of caution though... It is so much easier to run on a treadmill than it is on sidewalk. Try to run on dirt if you can. I was starting to get shin splints running on concrete around week 5 or so. I had to run on the treadmill for a while to ease up on my legs a bit.

Good luck, and pace yourself. Remember, you can't run if you hurt yourself!

Re: Using your smartphone to get in shape

Thanks man, I run on a rails to trails and try to stay on the grassy part. I do have problems if I run on a hard surface so I avoid it.

Week 1 done and no problems.

I would love to get an ipad but I just don't like carrying it around. Do you put it in a pack when you run? Sounds like a good app anyway thanks for the info

Re: Using your smartphone to get in shape

No I do not carry it with me when I run. It's a post run app., where I enter and store my run results for future reference. Which is something I would recommend if you're new to running.

Mapmyrun.com is something similar that I've used before too. Where you enter in your route and it calculates all that for you as well. There is also a gps mapping app for your phone (maymyrun), but it doesn't give you the beeps when it is time to walk/run like the Couch to 5K/10K does.
