Leg / feet cramps

I am getting some severe leg and foot cramps in the night and I need some suggestions on what to do about them. As background, I have recently upped my stationary biking to a goal of 40 miles a week (Fat Burner and Aerobic - mixed on each day). One of the other gym-rats suggested that I need to add salt to my diet but I don't know about this as a remedy.

If you havent had blood testing done in awhile you might want to have your doctor order it. Leg cramps can be an indicator of low potassium or high blood sugar.

Very interesting. I kind of like the low potassium option since I had to give up bananas on this high protein diet I am on. Thanks!

To replace the missing bananas, you can add potassium pills.

Potassium has a lot to do with heart health. You should get some blood work done. I had a run of low potassium and low sodium, never had any leg cramps. Though, I could not get out of bed either. lol

If the doc clears you!!! Coconut water helped me instantly. I get the flavored ones. Raw or straight coconut water is tough for me to get down as it is an odd taste.

Thanks folks; lots of good data. As for the coconut milk, I figure that if I mix in enough Jack Daniels I can somehow force it down.

Re: Leg / feet cramps

Drink chocolate milk right after the hard exercise.

I read about this in a running magazine, tried it and it works.

Also if you are doing hard exercise using your legs (running, biking etc.) you should do a serious, regular stretching program to get your leg muscles stretched out and keep them that way.

Re: Leg / feet cramps

I usually drink Gatorade. Didn't help last night. About 11 PM my left leg cramped up almost enough to make me cry.
