This is my 5 year old son Colton. Colton is an avid outdoors...kid. He started trapping last year and loves fishing. He has also been tagging along on deer and turkey hunts with me since he was 3.
This summer we spent a lot of time shooting 100s of rounds from his .22 rifle to hone his shooting skills. He then moved up to a .243 and can shoot as tight of a group as I can at 50 yards.(good for him or bad for me?) Posted more pictures below.
This week his uncle loaned him an in-line muzzle loader to participate in the PA early muzzle loader season as a mentored hunter.
I set up a ground blind on Monday morning along a recently picked corn field. As soon as Colton got off the bus we got changed and headed to the blind. I set the muzzle loader up on a Caldwell Deadshot Fieldpod. This is a tripod/gun rest which hold the gun so he does not fight with the weight of the gun and only has to aim and pull the trigger. Colton practiced aiming at squirrels until this deer arrived. Around 5:10 a lone button buck entered the field at 50 yards. Once Colton said he was on the deer I took the safety off and cocked the hammer. When the white smoke cleared, his prize lay in the field. Then it was a bunch of high fives and hugs.
It turns out that Grandpa was watching out of his house window when the deer stepped into the field. Grandpa watched the whole thing.
What a great experience. And to make it better we have been sharing it. I took a video camera along and had it recording on a tripod in the blind. You don't see the deer in the video but it is an over the shoulder angle of Colton taking the shot. And of coarse we filmed the recovery.
I filmed the hunt on my video camera which has miniDV cassettes. If anyone could enlighten me on how to get the video onto my computer I would love to share it too. Please send me a PM if you can help.
