2016 Waterfowl Youth Hunt

Took two youth hunters with their grandpap up north for the youth duck day. Storms moving in and around the area left me hopeful they would have a great morning. And a great morning they had indeed.

I took the older of the two last year and we only scratched 1 bird in 3 shots. This year, we brought his younger cousin along and i brought the shells, the dog and the blind to hide us a bit.

Trying to hold their excitement we heard numerous woodies calling in the swamp just prior to first light, and the sounds of whistling wings buzzing by us had them with an itchy trigger finger.

I tried my best to only allow them to take shots i would consider close enough and before i knew it, they were dropping birds left and right.

At one point I had to instruct them not to shoot any more, because Reggie and I (the dog) were out playing pick up and there were 4 dead on the water. (didnt want them to shoot too many wood ducks in case i wasnt watching)

They learned why birds roost why they leave the swamp in the morning, how their wing beats and size give you a great indication of what they are from a distance and we also learned how to share as a few other people came in late, we invited them next to us to get some shooting as well.

Ended up with 4 wood ducks, 1 blue wing teal and 1 hen mallard.

This was the last year for the oldest, but the youngest had already messaged me about wanting to go next year for the opener

Feels good to be a part of this memory for them

let me tell you, as an adult i have to admit i was jealous seeing the wide open easy passes of birds coming right at them in your face... any good shooter would have been done in 4 or 5 volleys..

but it was extremely rewarding
