Michael's first doe!

This Saturday everything finally came together. I got to take Mike out to camp and we had a blast. Got up early and headed up the mountain. Saw a doe on our way up that was standing out in the open at 50 yards. I wasn't green lighting him for anything over 35. Finally she had enough of us coming up the mountain and took off. We continued up and got in our deadfall. It only took an hour until we had deer around us. A doe came in at 40 yards and quickly made her way into the thick saplings. While watching her below I looked to my right and saw a spike on the flat next to us. He was right around the max distance I wanted him taking shots. I got the crossbow setup just in time for him to get out of range. Then Michael says "There is a big gray buck!" while looking through the crossbow scope. I took a quick look and there was a monster 8 point. I pulled out the rangefinder and he was at 56 yards. Way too far. I grunted and hit the can call. He was on a mission and it wasn't dealing with us. He marched up over the top of the mountain with no shot. Michael was shaking from head to toe. He said "It feels like I just drank 3 monsters. I'm shaking and I can't stop. I'm not even cold!" We settle back in and the little man drifts off. Right around 2 we have some action once again. Two deer are coming right up to us. One is a spike and the other is a doe. The spike comes up and stops broadside at 30 yards. He says he wants to try for the spike since it was bigger and closer than the other deer. There was a Y tree in front of us that was low to the ground. From my vantage point it was a perfect shot with no obstruction. When I set the crossbow up for my little hunter I didn't take into account his sight plane being lower than mine. He said he was ready and thought he could get him. I click off the safety. Tell him to squeeze when he is ready right behind the front shoulder. He squeezed and the right part of the Y of the tree explodes and flings the arrow straight into the ground. The buck gets uneasy and looks around for a bit then just goes back to feeding. The doe never stopped feeding and was totally oblivious to what just happened. I quickly recock the crossbow and get on another bolt. By this time the spike has worked his way down into the saplings. The doe however starts working up right next to us in the wide open. We get him lined up on the doe. He took his time. Told me when he was ready. I clicked off the safety. Told him to take his time and make a good shot. Crossbow goes off. THWACK! The doe barrels forward into a tree. Gets up does three quick bounds and down she goes! High fives, hugs, and phone calls quickly follow. So proud of the little man!

Re: Michael's first doe!

Congrats to you guys!!
The sight pattern amazes me often. My daughter sits one foot away from me in the ladder stand and sees deer 20 feet sooner.

The United States of America has the greatest people on earth.
