Electric help

Gentlemen. of the many hats I wear, electrician is not one of them. My question may be dumb, but here goes. I want to add a sub panel to a 100 amp service. I have seen this done before, so I know its possible. My question is, the existing box id GE. Does the new sub panel have to be GE ? I have an extra Square D and breakers I want to use, but I don't know if I can. Help !

Re: Electric help

You can add any brand as your sub feed box.

Re: Electric help

Thanks Western. One more. Can I add another 100 Amp panel as the sub or does it need to be smaller than the main box?

Re: Electric help

You can put a 100amp breaker in for the sub panel, also make sure the sub panel is feed with 4 wire 2 hots, neutral and ground. By code in the sub panel you have to separate your grounds and neutral and the box can't be bonded"the green screw in the ground bar"

Re: Electric help

You might want to price a breaker for that Sqaure D box. They are expencive. For the price of some of the breakers you could almost buy a new box.
