need help on removing an axle

Needed to replace the rear rotors on my '99 Blazer. Passenger side went well. When I pulled the wheel on the driver's side it was a nightmare. The dust backing cover was completely gone, one bolt broke off on the caliper bracket requiring me to have to remove all that stuff, which means pulling the axle. I have the spyder gear bolt and pin pulled but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the spider gears out of the carrier to permit access to the axle clip. There's two odd looking "things at the carrier opening where I would think the spyder gears would be removed from. I have no idea of how to get those thing out so the gears would come out. Anyone have any experience with these and would be able to walk me through this? I could rig up a phone in my garage to do a real time "walk through if necessary. I'm heading back out to the garage right now and should have a functional phone in about 15 min., just in case someone reads this and can help right away.. (814) 7843972

I gotta go agitate the techies!
