You will get conflicting opinions on this issue. I put mine in last winter without the extra $1200 pipe, and I had no issues. My opinion is, if your flue is in good shape, just hook it up and roll. There are thousands of them out there burning fine just like that. I also remember when woodstoves went crazy years ago, no one used the liner pipe then. I think the stainless pipe is a fine idea for an old chimney that you are not sure of the condition. Also, on a lighter note, if you drink beer make sure you have plenty on hand, because hooking up a insert will drive you to drink, but you can do it!
