Outside Firepit/Grill?

Would like to build my own firepit/grill. Could be a permanent structure or something somewhat portable. Just wondering if anyone has some pictures of one's that they have built and advice on what to do or not to do. Looking for something that is good for cooking. Wanting to start cooking more over a wood fire instead of the propane grill. Thanks.

If your looking for something simple. I use a 20 inch tractor trailer tire rim. A 20 inch round grill grate will drop right in it about one inch to the first rib. Dry line the outside with mountain stone. Good to go.

Re: Outside Firepit/Grill?

something like this cspot? there is a 22.5 truck rim buried in there. an old oven rack will sit on top. i welded legs to the underside of the rim to keep it off the ground, with access to part of it to regulate how much coals are under it for heat control.

if you bought it, a trucker brought it

I just used landscape stone for the ring. Then I welded some rebar together to make the grate. The picture below is of me steaming some snow crabs legs.

Re: Outside Firepit/Grill?

My brother made the exact same set up as the above with landscape stones...Until a year or so after heavey use. I was planning on the same set up, but his stones have started to crack from the heat. Nothing fell on them. They just slowly started to crack down the middle one by one. They weren't designed to withstand heat.

I just got a new place, and have been watching this thread to get some ideas of my own. I've seen some good ideas, but nothing I want to do yet. I do like the mountain stone around the tractor rim though. I may have to model something off that design.

Re: Outside Firepit/Grill?

here is a further out view of our ring. i like the stones slightly higher than the rim. that way if one of the little ones fall near it there is no way they can grab the hot rim when the fall. the rock warms so you can put your feet on them without shoes and not burn your feet as well

if you bought it, a trucker brought it

That is alot like the one we just built on our patio but is a little bigger....Lowes has a wide variety of those bricks, took 10 minutes to build cost us about $25...we got 16 stones and did two levels, next time there i am getting more block to make it one more layer (like yours) two levels are a bit too close for cooking or big fires, 3 looks just right. it blended in great with our patio stone. i just took out one of the 2x2' patio stones and built a circle around the bareground left behind with these. Works and looks custom built.
