I have a knife holder in the kitchen that was rather old and looking all its 37 years age. Looking for ideas of a new holder I saw a few magnetic holders online and thought I'd build one. It took a little experimenting with the amount of magnets to get the correct holding power. I'm happy with how it turned out.
It started out with a piece of oak. Routed the edge and sanded the surface.
Drilled 15 holes in the back for the magnets using a forstner bit.
I used hot glue to keep the magnets in place.
Put several coats of polyurethane on the wood.
Finished product. It might be time to get new knives since they are as old as the original holder.
LLB, Using a test piece of wood I drill just deep enough not to poke the tip of the bit through the wood. Just guessing there is about 1/8 - 1/16" wood left. The closer you can get the magnets to the surface the better they will hold the knives.
