QDMA Members certified in prescribed burn
Just recently several members from the North Mountain and Susquehanna Branches completed a certification course for controlling wildfires. The course gives the members both PA-130 and S-190 certifications which will be the first required courses to work on future prescribed burn crews for the Pa. Game Commission and DCNR.
The course taught the QDMA members about the proper wildfire terminology, proper forest fire fighting techniques, equipment and how various weather conditions influences how wildfires behave. They were also instructed on the many safety aspects of fighting forest fires and how to determine other safety measures based on new weather reports.
The members decided to take the offered course since Pennsylvania had just recently passed news laws regarding the added ability to use prescribed burns as a management tool. The Pa. Game Commission has put the use of prescribed burns into their management plans and is slated to begin burns this year.
The group is hoping to continue their training with other courses more geared to creating prescribed fire burns to create more suitable and productive habitat for deer and other wildlife.
Those who completed the course are Jack Zborovian, DCNR Fire Specialist supervisor for the Wyoming Fire Division with the Bureau of Forestry, Chip Sorber- Habitat Chairman, North Mountain Branch, Chris Denmon- President, North Mountain Branch, Jack Sorber-President Susquehanna Branch and Jeremy Sorber- also a Board Member of the North Mountain Branch.
