Re: Varmint grenade

I have used them in my 223 heavy varmint. Very accurate groups 5 shots at 100yds 3/8" group and very nasty on Pa ground hogs out to 200yds. My 223 rifle has a 1-9 twist 26" barrel. varmint grenade were 36gr HP

Re: Varmint grenade

Varmint Grenades are a soft lead core bullet with a thin jacket to promote rapid expansion.
Page 31 of the Pa, hunting digest Ammunition Lead bullet or ball, or bullet designed to expand on impact.
So yes they are legal for hunting.
I reload and hunt with them in 223 and 22-250 . The nice thing about them they are cheap accurate and you can obtain good expansion at lower velocities.

Re: Varmint grenade

My apologies I miss spoke on the Varmint grenades , These bullets may not be Legal for hunting in Pa, I was thinking the Varmint Nightmare sold by Mid-south shooters which is the bullet I described. Not the Varmint grenades Which is a fragmenting bullet.

That should cover the Varmint Grenades.

I played with reloading these quite a bit for CA trips to the "unleaded Zone". If you have a 22 caliber with a faster twist they fly pretty well. Conventional 1/12 twist in a 223 I have found to be border line. If you can run them fast enough they will stabilize with the slower 1/12 twist.

I had to go up to a 26' barrel in a 1/12 twist to get them to fly decent...couldn't attain it with 20" or 22" barrel. The 223AI guys seem to have success getting them to fly along with the 22-250 guys.

It's the bullet dimension (longer); even though light, that seems to be the hiccup with these bullets. I havn't been impressed with their performance on coyotes either. Work pretty well on groundhogs and such.

I am not sure why anyone would want to use these other than if they have to, for some "un-leaded" restriction. Or if skips were of major concern.
