Re: Maximum Loads?

ive loaded for 3 rifles now..one 22-250..all 3 of them have settled in real nicely .5-1gr less than nosler manual max..and i worked up a bit farther over max..carefully and watching for pressure signs etc...never found anything more accurate than what i found just before book make..

in the fast 224s, i much rather have an accurate mild load than fast one...if my gun liked super hot, fine...but, im not gunna shoot super hot if i dont have to...its already hot and will already be hard on barrels..let alone if i had a 40gr pill doing 4100fps...

Re: Maximum Loads?

I dont usually. I've always been the kind to back off a grain or two. But now I think my next batch of 30-06 ammo is going to push a 180 grain bullet at 2,800 fps. I know people have been doing that for years but it's hotter than many reloading manuals show.

Re: Maximum Loads?

In my .300 Win I run them at max. For most other calibers I stay at least 1/2 grain below and keep watching for pressure signs.

Re: Maximum Loads?

I agree I'ed rather have better groups and 1-200 slower,.224 cals. go fast anyways. Just got me thinkin a guy at gun club looked at my m t cases and said primers looked good should go up alittle. Im at 1 gr. under and 3/4" groups at 100yds. His theory is .224's shoot better at max or above. I just had new win. brass split from rim towards neck (new brass) about 1" long. Scared me some gas shoots out from action at gas hole, Anyways I sent bag of brass 3 once fired split brass cases and 17pcs. of my loaded bullets to Winchester. I wrote down my load info. and they got back to me that they were glad I took intrest in contactin them and sent 200 new brass, but didn't coment on my loads just thanked me. This all took about 12 days. So after the brass deal and loadin about 1gr. under I hate to start to play with load but it's a good time now waitin for chucks to grow some. My 222 shoots real good at 1 gr. under but that thing shoots good no matter what you feed it...later

Re: Maximum Loads?

I shoot a max load of IMR 4198 in my 222 with a 50 gr. bullet. Wasn't max in the '50's and 60's. I'm also shooting a bit over max in a 30-30 with IMR 4064. As of yet it isn't a max for my particular rifle. Other then that I stay with the current manuals and usually find the "sweet spot" a bit below max loads listed. Bottom line is that every rifle is a law unto itself. Having said that abiding by the load data in the manuals will keep you out of trouble for sure.

Re: Maximum Loads?

Depends on how the load shoots. If a load will shoot 1" groups at max. and 3/4" groups 200 feet slower, I'll run it at max (unless it's strictly a paper-punching load). Most of my rifles (from .224 - .375 cal.) shoot best at or near max. A few do not. Experimentation is key.

Re: Maximum Loads?

Ya 222's are sweet. My 222 became my pred. gun and shootin 50 gr. speer sp and h-335 powder. When it was my or still is chucker I used 50gr. v-max. Got tired with long range chucks and my L R 25.06 and ended up sellin it and just used 222. Got the itch to go long again so got hooked up with heavy awkward target gun again but stayed with .224 cals. (220 swift) and my buds shoot 22-250,204's. When I find a good load that gives me good to better groups I mostly stay with it. My swift is loaded with h-380 at 41.5 and 42.5 is max in most books but I see on net webs. guys are above max with 55gr. bullets. I like the 55 for longer shots cause 1-14 twist likes small bullets. Most guys shoot 50's and down. 4064 runs low preasures I like that but knocks off fps the most. 4064 is a nice powder in lots of cals. IMO case size tells you which powder to use like your 4198 load. I think I used that too in my 222 for awhile but got hooked on the H 335 and 380 runs nice in powder measurer no grindin in my Redding guess that's a dumb reason to use a powder???...later

Re: Maximum Loads?

My gun has ss barrel so 1 that helps life 2 powders are better then before or say from the 70's-80's like the old h-4831 and many new powder's 3 seems the new books are lower max loads today. I gave my old books away wish I'ed kept them, but again the newer powder's aren't in them 4 When my barrel goes I'll get new to my taste which might be fun to do. How's the song go same ol persent with a brand new bow....later

That's the powder I use in my triple deuce, only I shoot a 60 grain Hornady SP bullet. Without looking, I want to say 19.6 grains with a Rem 7 1/2 BR primer.
Back to the topic...I have no problem with shooting a max load as long as there are no pressure signs. I NEVER exceed a max load though. I do not think it's worth playing with for a few fps.
