300 Wby Mag

I just picked up a 300 Weatherby Mag. I'm looking for some suggestions on loads for bullets at least 180 grains. Thanks.

80grs of IMR4831 under a 180gr bullet does well my Winchester Mod 70 Classic chambered in .300WBY.

Re: 300 Wby Mag

I've been shooting 80 gr. of H-4831 with a 180 gr. bullet and a CCI Mag primer.

I reduced the load to 78 gr. with Barnes TSX.

How is the recoil on this? I use IMR 4831 in a few other calibers so I was thinking about using it on the 300 Wby mag too.

It's a .300 Wby.

Any full power load will come back briskly but nothing you can't survive.

Re: 300 Wby Mag

just food for thought, but I read somewhere , that they recommend the large rifle primers for the 300 wthby, can`t remember if it was in loading manual, or a reloading forum, or weatherby site.

Re: 300 Wby Mag

Recoil in a word... BRUTAL ! Not for the faint of heart off a bench, about 5 shots and anyone will flinch, if your going to tone it down with slow powder just shoot 4350-H, same thing in velocity and it'll be a tad cleaner..big time power !!

To be honest it is not bad at all to me. The rifle stock fits me well though and being 255lbs on the hoof helps a lot too.

The 80gr/180gr load I use is for Winchester Fail Safe bullets that I used on an elk hunt.
For Pa I use 165gr Hornady Spire Points (83gr IMR4831) or 150gr Barnes X(85gr IMR4831)

These loads are safe in my rifle but please start lower if you try any.
