New with a few questions

I'm rather new to the hunting dog world and hunting period. That being said I'm as green as you could get. Have only killed one deer in three years of hunting to give you an idea LOL. Well I did my research and bought an Airedale from decent bloodlines. I've been messing around with some pheasant, squirrel and coon with her. She has a pretty decent nose but hasn't put it all together yet (she doesn't have the best teacher LOL) She's young and has only been out hunting twice (pheasant). Is there anyone in the south central PA area running flushing bird dogs I can run with or any dog running the game mentioned above? She has a great disposition with other dogs and is not aggressive at all. This would greatly benefit me and my dog! I will take any tips given also!
Thanks,

Pete

Re: New with a few questions

I am hoping to get down in southcentral pa this season a little with my squirrel dog. I am sure you did your research on the Airedale. Some are good at some things and others or good at others. Some are all around. We had one when I was a kid that I couldn't get to hunt anything but I was just a kid. It was the toughest dog I ever saw in my life. That dog flat out was water dog. He would jump in the river in the winter and swim all over then come out and roll around in the snow. He could literally dig his claws in the ice and run on it. He would come home looking like a big snowball in the winter with ice hanging all over him. I know they can be good bird dogs, coondogs, squirrel dogs, and bobcat dogs. Did you get her from good hunting bloodlines and do you know how well the parents did at hunting and what game they hunted? That is always the biggest part of the battle then it is patience and time.

You canít get them if you ainít in the woods!!

Re: New with a few questions

I was just thinking. I think there is a kennel down there somewhere near Ligioner who has some real good airedales. Might want to get a subscription to Full Cry because I do believe there is a monthly article on Airedales. Used to be anyhow. The breed always fascinated me. Two stories from my father who would be 98 now if he were alive. There used to be a bounty on bobcats and he had an airedale that he would rent out to people who wanted to hunt bobcats. Next story same dog- My aunt was walking down the street and got attacked by a mean dog and it bit her up pretty bad. My father decided to "walk" down that same road right after the dog attacked my aunt. That dog came out after my father and the dale killed it. That is the reason he got us an airedale when we were young- he was also fascinated with the breed and had fond memories of them.

You canít get them if you ainít in the woods!!

Re: New with a few questions

yes I did my research. Im also part of the traditional airedales board and got my pup from a good breeder. She has many famous lines in her background. Both of her parents hunt. That would be awesome if she can run with your squirrel dog. Like i said this is my first hunting dog and I feel like running her with an experienced dog would help wonders. And I have two other dogs and she became the dominant one very quickly LOL

Re: New with a few questions

Just saw your post. I will try to get back to you this season. Me and a friend who has a real good treeing cur are planning on trying an area that is about 2 hours from you that I got a good tip on. He is probably gonna have a pup to run also. I am still hoping I have a pup to get going. My female is getting up there and I really don't want to not have a dog at least getting going at this point. If your Dale is good with other dogs and me and Bob can get it together I will let you know. How old is your Dale?

You canít get them if you ainít in the woods!!

Re: New with a few questions

My Dale is a little over 1 year old and is good with other dogs. I would greatly appreciate if you guys would allow me to run with you. She seems to have the desire but just really hasn't put it together yet. She still has a lot of pup in her but I think she will turn out. Whats the area you were thinking of? You can message me privately if you don't want to give the location out to the world
