Let a couple pass tonight

I was strongly debating between running the dog tonight and hunting squirrels, and it was out of pity for his not being run much this year that I decided to take him. Boy I was glad I did. He put up two rabbits for me tonight (we were out for about 3 1/2 hrs) and the chases were, IMO, pretty spectacular for a dog who has seen little to no action all year!

The first one came out of some rosebushes. He took it in a fairly large circle, and when it came back to me it passed within ten feet of me. It actually sat down a few times in front of me. I was so into listening to the way the dog was chasing I gave him a pass. I think not too long after that the dog lost that one in a log pile, but a few minutes later he had another one going. It actually could have been the same rabbit and it just doubled back, but it looked smaller the second time around. Anyway, he brought that rabbit back around three times. The first time I gave it a pass as well. The other two times the bugger stuck to the goldenrod and I couldn't take a shot. The last time it passed me it was getting dark and I just called him off the chase. Between both rabbits, he ran almost non-stop for about 1 1/2 hrs.

I ended up with no rabbits tonight, but being out running the dog, getting him chasing some rabbits, it was all worth it!

A bad day hunting rabbits beats a good day of anything else!

Re: Let a couple pass tonight

seems to me that pooch wants you take him out all time when you go hunting... Only think about rabbit hunting... forget squirrel hunting and all other stuff... just focus on rabbits, the more you run your buddy the more he becomes your only and best hunting buddy....over years I had 1 beagle that would never Break no matter how many times I ran this dog it just didn't have the genes for hunting! gave that dog to my sister for a house dog, there he lived his life happy...

years ago when I ran dogs... I didn't shoot every rabbit they were running. there were times they would circle rabbit 2 or 3 times, I used let them run rabbits till it was holed some days, at end of day we had to corner the dogs just get leash on them, they never wanted to stop!!....

Take a kid hunting as much as you can!

Re: Let a couple pass tonight

Oh man I don't think I could ever give up squirrel hunting! I love taking the flintlock out for squirrels. But I do love taking the dog out more than just about anything else, and he clearly loves to run. He didn't get much run time this year because I started going to college this year and he had the injury that Willyp mentioned, so I really didn't take him out preseason at all. Willyp, I responded to the other thread but I'll reply briefly here as well. The vet gave the dog a shot of rimadyl and prescribed a few weeks rest and he is back to his normal self. I think he had a minor back injury that ended up resolving itself through rest.
