Anyone handgun hunting for Deer with a 357?
Looking for some tips.
Have a Ruger GP100 with a 6" barrel not interested in mounting a scope on it.

I've taken deer with a .44 Mag, but not a .357 Mag. However, a .357 with a good bullet will definitely take a deer. A 158 grain bullet used to be the standard, but now they have 180 grain bullets.

What tips are you looking for? I hunt with a scoped .44 Mag that is sighted in for 100 yards. But I also have an iron sighted .44 mag that I carry when my primary weapon is a rifle. With iron sights, I limit myself to 50 yards.

Best advise is to get out and practice.

I have taken a few with a .357 6" barrel. I shot Federal Classic 180 grain HP factory ammo. I have some Hornady 158 grain HP's that the gun likes and hope to get a shot with those. The 180 worked great for me but since I had that revolver re-timed it doesn't like them anymore.

Many say the .357 is underpowered for deer but it worked great for me. I watched my dad take a couple with his back when I was just starting hunting.

I shot a big doe many years ago with a 125 gr Rem hp that went about 75 yards and down. It was about 65 yards away and I used my scoped Blackhawk. I do think the 158 would be better, no experience with the 180's.

I've killed a few w/ a 357. I didn't like the 180's cause they just blow thru & tiny holes. I had good success with a 140 HP. They hot hard and leave a nice trail. Both killed the deer very quickly I just like a blood trail just in case
