Just curious to what barrel length everyone prefers for rabbits. Right now im using either my 11-87 or 870 20 gauges that i believe have 26" barrels. I would like to get something shorter, being that it seems like it would make getting through some of the brush easier and a little easier to swing and aquire my targets faster. But im not sure on it, so i figured Id ask what everyone else thought.

never really gave that much thought.. I've used 12 20 410 .22 and 32 muzzleloader

Just grabbed whatever gun suited me that day and took off; I've found that the type of gun or length of barrel never made getting through the brush easier...

As long as the scattergun barrel is not toted like a canoe's outriggers, there should be little difficulty.
There is often a bit of difficulty in swinging a short barrel and hitting a target well if a more open shot on any game is presented.
Unless you are starving, I would reduce the imagined need for speed.

26 works pretty well, even better if its a double cause the action is shorter. You should be able to get a shorter one for the 870 no problem. Rem. probably makes a 22 for it.

Also spreader loads can help with that first shot in close.

A few years back I had passed on to me a FIE single shot 12 with about 6 inches cut off.A gunsmith friend threaded the barrel to fit my 870 rem chokes, put a fiber optic sight on and installed sling swivels. The barel measures 22 inches.Lightweight. Nice rabbit gun.

Shorter the better for swinging it in the brush. I use a 14" contender and if need be I will shot a 11-87 20 with a 21" barrel.

I just ask not because I have trouble swinging.. but some places at this place I hunt are tight and a shorter barrel would def ease it up a bit.. this place is rabbit heaven and it ranges from low brush to very thick with trees and briar bushes.. I'm also looking for an over under

Browning made a Citori Upland with 24" barrels, if one likes the Shotgun Slade stagecoach-look.

Check MidewayUSA's site. They usually have replacement barrels for both Remy 20's in the 18.5" to 21" inch range. Also check eBay. There's a 20" 870 barrel on there now starting at $120. You could also post a WTB ad on this forum to see if anyone has a short barrel to part with.

Personally I've shot 26" O/U's for years for rabbit and birds and love them. If you end up looking for a new gun' you could look at a 26" barrel O/U. Like Davy pointed out, this will be 3-4" shorter than you current Remy's.

Man how can u carry a 2400 dollar over in under for rabbits lol Then again idk how anyone carries them in the woods. I like top of line equipment and I don't buy any junk but I just can't imagine that I guess 1400 is my cut off for a shotgun lol

Not sayin you need to go to an O/U. The pump and auto that the OP is using are great guns. I wouldn't carry a $2400 gun for rabbits either. There's no need to spend half that much. I hunt grouse, pheasant, rabbits, waterfowl, and crows all with the same gun and the O/U is just my personal favorite. Bought my SKB model 500 12 ga. imported by Ithaca in the 70's for $350. Great O/U that you still can buy used for $600-$800. Bought a model 600 2 years ago for $550. There are some great bargains in used O/U's if you look.

The shorter the better in my opinion. I've got a 870 20 gauge with a 21" barrel. Also use the contender with a 12" barrel a lot.

$2400 is just getting out of the cheapos. That and they are only metal and wood that is meant to be used. Never had jaggers or thorns leave a mark on a gun. Rocks on the other hand..

This! Saw a show where some guys were shooting some older high dollar guns. The guy that owned them says " I shoot these guns no matter how old or valuable because that's what they were made for" The african PHs bang around the bush with $30-50K guns. I'll concede that rabbit guns especially seem to take a beating so I might not want to use my best gun, but my best gun IS going bird hunting or something, not sit in the safe. When I'm gone none of it will matter.
