Looking around on other sites i see this to be a huge debate about the best coon trap , in your opinion what is your favorite and why ?

I like the 1 1/2 coil and bought some used DUKES 1 1/2 coil with Double Jaws and find this to be one of the best coon traps in My Opinion !!!! I also replaced all my springs with 1 1/2 Music Wire and they are strong and ready for next season !!!

Also read on Sullivans site that alot of guys over there think the # 2 Double Long Spring is a poor coon trap and i totally DISAGREE with this statement , i love this as a coon trap and it works great !!!

It's all based on opinion. There is no cut and dry "best" trap. For anything.

im greedy but i would like to see us be able to have as many choices as possible for catching coons...snares,coni's,DP's,footholds,etc.....and yes i would use all these methods if they were available....

220s are illegal to use in PA on land...160s are allowed in special bucket sets...read your rule book under "artifical cubby" i think it is...

Of the near 3,000 coon i've put up over the past 3 years 90% have been caught in grizz style dp's the other 10% stumbled into k9 sets. So roughly 2,700 coon over three years running a 1% loss in a trap that can be baited and set at home. Can be placed on location in seconds with cable. When set properly is absolutly weather proof. When done right can be checked at 60mph going down the road. And is the most specie specific trap ever built. Barring the fact you like being nipple deep in mud and water digging a pocket or lugging around coni boxes you spent all summer building. Why on God's green earth would you set any other kind of trap for coon?

Never said I caught them all. I get between 100/200 a year. I flesh for a couple guys. One of them catches more coon on a good day than most guys catch a year. Wasn't trying to pump myself up. Was trying to prove a point. The numbers are real. No I don't have any pics of the piles of coon I fleshed for other guys. Say what you will, don't really care if you believe me or not.

I dont think 1000 coon in a season in PA is far fetched at all...youd need to run a long line and have lots of permission...but with our milder winters now, i see no reason why it couldnt be done here in western PA...

Id never dream over 1000 red fox would be possible just looking at areas i have trapped/hunted...but it is..year after year...

I can't tell you why there were loses, only that it happened more than I liked. It's not because 1 1/2 coils are not strong enough to hold coons, but I've always kept pretty good notes on things, and there were weeks when it would be 10%. Not talking about snapped traps, I would only mark it as a lost animal if there was a disturbance (catch circle) of some kind. I switched to using all Sleepy Creek 11's in 1993 and since then I've had 4 lost coons out of what I would guess were 3 or 4 thousand held in those 20 seasons. I think if you can get a foot centered in an 11, no matter what time I check, it'll be there.

One theory I have on the coils, is that coons fight the trap and may get their back feet on the levers while pulling up on the front foot, releasing themselves ???

I do in fact believe there is a best coon trap out there , and it is my belief that the Duke 1 1/2 coil Double jaw is probably the best coon trap out there right now

That being said i also think that the dog proofs are also a good choice , followed by 160's in a bucket ..

This is my opinion and ive used quite alot of diffenent traps over the years...

I used to like the # 1 coil but the catch area is to small for my liking ...

Oh i almost forgot about the # 2 double long spring love this trap for coon also ..

lol, you just made a topic about getting new Duke 1 1/2 double jaws for the first time, and that you can't wait to catch coons in them. You proclaim it as the best coon trap without ever even catching one raccoon in them.

That right there is some priceless internet information grin

What would make your double jaw that much better then a regular 1 1/2???I run most 1 1/2 for coons and put them all on drags which have cut my losses alot.Decided to buy some DP's for this season to try out. But, i still can't see how a double jaw is that much better of a trap.I guess if you stake your coon sets solid that extra jaw surface would help but they are no stronger.I know you can't be worried about chew outs and have a #2 longspring listed as a favorite trap of yours.I'm with Walker and think snares should be permitted

Exactly.

Anyways...lots of people have their own OPINION as to what the best trap is. However, you are not going to get EVERYONE to agree on 1 particular trap for an animal.
