Friday I drove out to meet some friends in the "PA Wilds" section.

My friends Mike and Mary are members of a state leased cabin which is about 1.5 miles from the nearest maintained road. Cabin pic to follow.

This is one of the loneliest highways in PA, 30 some miles of no permanent residents, no electricity and no phone signal.

One of the many views of the PA Wilds.

Driving up a "run" the cover is at the headwaters between two mountains.

The first of several covers along the "run".

We saw quite a few woodcock on this trip and managed to flush 16 timberdoodles along with 11 grouse.

Morgan pointing a woodcock. For some reason, she just started pointing woodcock this year.

I was very pleased to take a large cock grouse.

I hope everyone had a great PA opener!

After several days of scouting in the Westmoreland and Clearfield counties with only 1 flush, I decided I wanted to get my young dog some experience on birds. So I took things into my own hands and went out got some chukars with a couple of buddies. Put down 10 birds, ended up with 8 birds in the bags. Dog got some great experience on the birds, nice points and a couple of nice retrieves to hand.

And my buddy's 6mo old GSPs got introduced to birds. We capped off the day with a bon fire, pot luck dinner, and slept under the stars. I understand a lot of people have their opening day traditions , but this was a great day. Sorry I don't have any pictures to share.

My grouse opener will be later this week.

BB,
We had a great opener training pups, had about 13 points and saw a mess of Grouse in the Hemlocks and along the streams, training we did not even kill a Grouse or Woodcock, next week before everyone one returens, I will spend a couple of days doing some serious Grouse & Woodcock hunting. I had a very enjoyable opener this year
with Justin and his two young pups. I believe we will make this an opening day tradition from now on, I like Justins company in the Grouse woods.

Wow, what county is that? That is a sweet place. Looks pretty wild to say the least. Alot more wild than the part of Elk county our cabin is in.

Thanks for the post and congrats! I could not scratch one down to save my life Saturday. 0-5 shooting... mostly at wild flushers, but I got a good look at 2 of the 4 wild flushers I shot at. The pup (11 month old Bristol) bumped one late afternoon (pretty blatantly) but then did finally point one on the very edge of the cover and the road. I, of course, missed! I moved 13 birds in 5 hours afield (all grouse), which was better than I expected for where I was hunting... found two new nice covers though, if you can get through them without breaking ankles. The covers were not very puppy friendly (too rocky, she was having trouble getting any range) but we still had a blast.

I screwed up and took my GSP and mountain bike out to get Elk pictures Friday. She runs a lot but the dirt road did a number on her pads. I went out Saturday solo and put up 3. Not willing to shoot at the 1st 2 because I figured I wouldn't find them if I was succesful in hitting them. 3rd one was a straight away. I kept my eye on it an able to recover it. Nice getting out but I would rather get nothing with the dog than a limit without her. We will be out later in the week.

By the way. The elk didn't like the GSP. You would have thought I had a wolf with me.
