I was too young to see the pot belly stove but I do remember the Kero 'pot burner' and the hassel of pouring those 5 gal containers of Kero into the storage tank.

We replaced that with a vented propane heater. Worked great for years but slowly started to rust inside due to the dampness. It started going 'boom' each time the thermostat kicked in. The sound got louder and louder until we figured it had to go b/4 it exploded.

Dad had a line on a mobile home furnace when someone suggested the electric baseboard, memories of Kero smelling clothes, etc. made us think twice. One long electric [8'] strip in the 18 x 16 front room and (2) short strips in the 18 x 12 bedroom.

We already had the wood stove and it does help warming up a cold building but once the place is warm it maintains 65 degrees w/ out the wood stove. Flintlock season it can be chilly when I get up maybe 60, especially if the outside temp is less than 15 or so.

Normal hunting seasons don't affect the billing. We need to have a few work days running multiple power tools or someone staying there for an extended time in cold weather to pay more than the 'vacation home' minimum electric bill. We've only gone over 2 - 3 times in the past 12 - 15 years.

Whitetail,
Before you panic, have the old furnace checked out,
it just might need some small maintance and cleaning.

I'm with Pine-Creek on this one. Get it checked out first. Could be just a t-stat, hi-limit or similar control.

I am definately hoping it is something simple believe me. That little unit has done a tremendous job for me for the past 25 years and with all the money I just sank into the addition I am not left with much back up cash. Having a tough time finding someone to come out and look at it. The camp is in between Kane and Marienville, if anyone knows of anyone in that area please let me know. Thanks for the advice and ideas guys, I sincerely appreciate it.

Why are you ruling out a woodburner?

You really should have it cleaned, inspected and tested for safe operation. I can give you some ideas how to rule out the basic problems. PM me if you still need help.

Bob,
You were spot on with the reccommendation. Made the call, they suggested a couple guys. Someone is coming on Thursday morning to meet me there and check it out.
