I'm looking to get some chestnut trees to plant, is there any that are blight free that i could plant?

There is a group you can join (american chestnut assoication?) and I believe members can buy one or two seedlings from them-I think they are very expensive.

Look around on the internet for the group.

There is no 100% disease resistant American Chestnut.

Chinese Chestnut is the closest thing.

If you plant American Chestnut, they will get the blight and die. They may survive long enough to produce some nuts, but in the end they ALL will get the blight.

The day is coming when a blight resistant American Chestnut will be available, and when it does, WE ALL NEED TO HELP BRING IT BACK!

They are producing trees now that they are hoping are more resistant to the blight.

You can still find American chestnut trees growing as stump or root sprouts some of these get big enough to produce a few nuts but all of these trees are clones of the parent so they have no resistance.

If you check into the foundation I posted above, you will see what generation of tree they are now growing and how optimistic they are about being able to someday bring this great tree back.

Dunstan chestnuts are a near pure American chestnut. google them and you will find a number of nurseries

Once in awhile you still get a good growing American Chestnut.


This one on our property was doing very well until a bear decided to claw up the tree and then the blight got hold of it.








I'd get some Dunstan Chestnuts like homeinthewoods suggested but they are pricey.
