OK before this starts out being the regular "YOU CAN'T USE AIR GUNS IN PA FOR HUNTING" threads. Most of us owning decent air guns already know this but question WHY? This is neither a WHY CAN'T WE thread.

This thread is about if PA allowed us to use them would we? I have been thinking about getting a NY or Ohio license because they allow the use of hunting with air guns. That and NY has no closed season on Red Squirrels, Ohio's squirrel season opens when our dove season does. Ohio also has no closed season on Chipmunks.

NY's out of state license (for what I want) is $85 and to hunt Reds before the season opener (also Sept 1) you need to possess the previous years license. So here I am contemplating spending $85 - $165 (Ohio with out deer) to hunt small game with an air rifle.

I had thought about selling the rifle but I bought a new scope for it before Christmas and recently sighted it in and once again I am astonished how wickedly accurate and deadly that Gamo Hunter is. I really want to use it.

So I have included a poll on here (hopefully, it is my 1st time creating a poll) and I am looking for your input. Please take time to post if you would or would not use your air rifle to hunt in PA if we were allowed to and please select the answer closest to your view in the poll. We never know where this might go but we might be able to get a regulation made that would allow us. I know I would be willing even if we had to buy an air rifle only stamp for an air rifle only season.
Would You Hunt With an Air Rifle in PA if Allowed?

Thanks guys and gals, oh while we are at it could we list out current air rifles/guns?

Mine is a Gamo Hunter 220 with a BSA 3-12x44AO scope and a Gamo Delta with a 4x32 scope which was bought for Plinker JR when I bought the 220 10 years ago. Given to me last January from a friend I bought a S&W 622 is a Gamo P32 semi auto, fun.

I answered I don't know because I doubt that I would use
one. I much prefer the 17hmr or shotgun for squirrels. I
do have a Gamo air rifle and actually have shot a couple
squirrels with it. They were getting into the roof of our
shop building so we decided they had to go. They were in
season so I didn't see a problem with it. I can honestly
say that the Gamo did a real good job and I dropped the
first squirrel right off the tree. The second one I hit a
bit far back and it ran up the tree where my 2nd shot also
dropped it. After that I shot some pigeons and sparrows
with it because they were becoming a nuisance also. My
assessment of the Gamo air rifle is that it is a deadly
little gun at close ranges with a well placed shot but I
don't know that I would want it as a legal hunting gun for
anyone to use. I could see alot of people using them and
wounding more game than they kill. If you are off a little
bit with these guns it will only hurt game animals not have
enough power to anchor them. This is just my opinion after
using one and watching my dad use one to shoot a few birds
and squirrels with it.

I have a gamo nitrogen pellet rifle and where I use to live you could hunt with the pellet rifle at 50 yard with a hunting pellet I could take a squirrel with no issues. I prefer them over the shotgun as they cause less damage to the meat and they are perfect for areas where rifles are not allowed.

Well you have a point Corey. I used to hunt squirrels with a 22LR only and then a 22mag. This year I have various 22LRs, a 22mag (might have a 2nd by season start) a 17HM2 and 2 HMRs one being a revolver. A friend of mine told me once you head down the slippery slope of hand gun hunting you will be hooked. He is right and I have to admit I am planning on taking my Taurus 94 and Taurus 17HMR.

I think air gun hunting will have the same effect as hand gun hunting. The people I have read about that use air gun are very critical of their shots. They would rather miss or not take the shot than to not hit the kill zone. I would say that air rifle hunting is on par with archery hunting. You have more limitations that with firearms, you are often closer to your prey, you practice all the time to maintain you marksmanship etc. Hunting with an air gun is not for every hunter just as archery is not for every hunter. Those who have archery hunted (I did as a teen) and have taken game are hooked for life. I have never shot at a deer with anything let alone taken one. I gave up on deer hunting years ago, before my 20's. I went out one time, one day in my 20's.

You yourself have experience in taking game with an air rifle and I do too. We have both had the one shot that didn't kill. You were able to finish the wounded squirrel off. I was not. That red squirrel lived on for a couple years but never came close enough to the house again. We both have learned from that experience.

I am hooked on handgun hunting having taken a few things with a couple different handguns but to do that I had to practice and practice more and more.

Thank you VERY much for the input and vote. Don't forget the Squirrel Grand Slam :-)

I do some handgun hunting and it can be fun but it is a
real challenge hunting squirrels with them. I usually opt
for the 17hmr or shotgun but sometimes I bring the 22
revolver instead if I am up for the challenge that day.
A couple of us went to a hunting preserve this past winter
and I shot a ram with a .357 revolver and that was a cool
experience. I am hoping to get a deer with it one of these
years!

a .22lr is quieter and does the job on varmints and birds just fine.
