SGL 318 is off of Stoney Hollow Rd. just south of Rt. 940 near Pocono Lake. SGL 135 is at Clifton, N.W. of SGL 127.

You can find gamelands parking areas for 135 off Sandy Beaches Road(NE corner) and Sassafras Trail Road(SW corner). You will find Sassafras Trail back in the Lackawanna State Forest off of Pittston Road. You'll need pretty good clearance to navigate Sassafras Trail road...

WMU 3D
Deer Health Poor
Forest Health Fair
Deer/Human Conflict High

Population Trend Stable

GOAL Stabilize

Proposed Allocation 38,000

2006/07 Allocation 38,000
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can not speak for how all of 3D is but I don’t know what area they were looking at to find deer in poor health, unless they were counting the road kills.
Most of the doe that I am seeing have big bellies and last summer and fall most doe I saw had 2 fawns, so if the deer health is so poor, why is the reproduction rate high? I didn’t see one scrawny deer that was taken last hunting season and the ones I am seeing now came through the winter in fine shape.

As for the forest health being fair, again where are they talking about? If they are talking about in the game lands or the state forests the biggest reason for little growth on the ground is the canopy is so dense and the soil is rock hard. There is still substantial damage that was the result of the ice storms from Jan. 2005.
The one area we hunt has a large quadrant fencing off over 100 acres and the areas inside the fence and outside the fence look the same, yet we took 2 large deer from that area during rifle season.

As for the human/deer conflict, blame that on all the development that are being built. Try telling the guys hunting in the game lands, and you won’t get much sympathy from them.
This is why I am in favor of sub-sectioning some of the WMU’s. You can do a browse study or a pellet count in areas around the developments and you will see evidence there are tremendous amount of deer around, but if you know or watch the area regularly you will see the deer are there at night but run into the developments where hunting is not allowed the first sign of daylight or danger.
Anyone that hunts these areas know many of the developments bring in sharp shooters during the winter months to cull out the herd. For many this isn’t once every 10 years or so but annually.
If 10% of the deer counted around developments are figured into the hunting equation, that is even an over estimate.

The good thing about 38,000 doe tags is I will not have a problem getting one, the down side is I only shoot one deer a season and won’t target a doe until it’s my absolute last opportunity for the season.

I would say they'er looking at deer in the communities because those deer are in poor health.
My daughter and I will put in for our usual 2 tags for 3D.
