Stevens model 200 with a scope usually goes for around $359 on sale. It's a Savage 10/110 without the accutrigger and a cheaper stock. They're great shooters, however. Stay away from the Remington cheapos.

Okay, here's what was in our Dick's flyer last Sunday:

Savage Edge combo: $349
Savage M111 combo: $349
Rem. 770 combo: $299
Mossberg combo: $299
Marlin 30-30 combo: $349

The first four are bolt action rifles with 3x9x40 scopes. The Savage M111 is a syn. stocked rifle w/detachable magazine and not too long ago, generally went for around $320 this time of year.

The Marlin is the hard wood stocked "econo" M336, also with 3x9x40 scope.

Shot with factory ammo. I have yet to hear of a single XL7 or XS7 that won't shoot good. Wait...I take that back. there's ONE, and the owner recently returned it to Marlin and received a brand new rifle back.

Ken, I too have noticed that the Savage rifles were starting to get a bit pricy. I had one, but sold it. They do shoot great. My biggest complaints are the cheap wood stock, and the "matte" blue they put on the barrels. I understand that you can't have a really nice blue job on a inexpensive rifle, but they are starting to touch on the price of a 700?

There are some "gussied-up" Savages that nip at the heels of M700 prices, but the cheapest M700 combo on that Dick's flyer, was $100 more than either of those Savage combos.

I can definitely vouch for the marlin. Great straight shooting gun. I have it in the 270.

I would choose the Mossy over the Rem 770. I own a 710, and I wish I never bought it. Can't sell it either, nobody would pay over $100 for one.

Now, it wasn't in the OP, but I would recommend a Savage over either. You can get the Savage Edge for under $300 brand new, and put a scope on it for under $150 (Nikon ProStaff).

HOW ABOUT NEITHER...I just bought the new Savage Edge in 25/06 for my varmint carry rifle.. For $309.00 I got the rifle, scope, bases and mounts... It will shoot some amazing groups, the action is a little ruff and the clip is a little tough to get out but for the money you'd be hard hard hard pressed to beat this rifle and it comes in lots of chamberings.. gonna go back and pick up on in 22/250 also.. SAVAGE EDGE..it's alrighty!
