Great info on this topic. My question is I live in Northwest Wisconsin and the ground right now is froze down good and hard!!! How do you bed the trap in frozen ground using instructions for the set?? Do you chisel out a trap bed then bed trap then hay chaf over it?? I just started to use peat moss and love it can I use it yet???

Thanks for your input

Just set the traps, lay atop the frozen ground and scatter the hay over them. No need to bed. The only covering is the hay and don't worry if bits of the trap show through. The foxes don't seem to mind.

My trapping partner and I like to put a small bed of hay UNDER the traps to keep them from freezing to the ground in case of a thaw / freeze happening. Seems to work well.

The Hay Set is still batting 1000 with me . . . it's the only set I've been using this year so far!

Area? . . . I set them exactly as in the first posts pics. If you mean land wise, then I use 8 of them on 100 acres.

ok so this weekend i am putting out about 15 sets at least. for fox and coon.. this hay set is appearing to be amazing as far as i can see...i have a field that is about 300 yards wide and 1200 yards long... fence row on one side.. deep thick timber on the other.. i got some pics of a fox on my trail cam and was thinkin about puttin a hay set in the middle of this field so that it can be seen from a distance... then i can easily check it to.. but what is the secret to this set... why does a clump of hay with pee on it and traps under it work so good...

Hay equals Food to Fox...mostly Mice...they are used to hay bales being in a field during the summer and mice hiding under them...also it is a visual attractent..

You should think about setting a few hay sets in the field and not just right in the middle, look for were the fox are running and set either on those trails or right beside them!

Make 2 sets close together for a chance at a double catch...make them maybe 10 feet apart so that 1 fox can not reach the other set once caught.... many on here if you have seen the pictures make a few close together and come up with doubles....now is a time were double catchs can be more seeing it is breeding season!

Those Hay sets will also work in the Timber areas...don't over looking setting a few in the timber you talk about!
