Hello Fellow Hunters,
I have an old work buddy and current friend that is getting very close to moving to Montana. He is not a waterfowl hunter, but I'm trying to get him to go with me to get a taste of it before he leaves. He may not be leaving for about a year or more.

I have watched and heard several times on different waterfowl programs that Montana is actually the third (3rd) best ranked state in the nation for waterfowl hunting. It is particularly great around the Yellowstone and some other river in the west (I forgot the name). Mallards, Canada Geese, Pintails, you name it and it lands there in the migration.

If you have hunted there, please reply and help me convince my buddy to definitely consider the waterfowl hunting. If and when he goes, I hope to get out there to witness it myself. And, yes they do allow spinning wing motion decoys.

Thanks!

Titanium

there was a kid on the DU site who moved from PA to Montana. Seems like they really hammer the birds out there!

Hello jguns2002,
Yes, I saw that on some DU episodes both Ducks Unlimited and Ducks Unlimited Waterdog. I guess it's not ranked #3 in the nation for nothing. Not to mention the trout fly fishing, whitetail deer hunting, mule deer, and antelope. I think I might try stalling my friend from moving so I can go with him. After all, we only have "so many sunrises" left. Why not be in Montana.

Thanks!

Hello Jayson,
I checked for the other name of the river I saw DU hunting on and it was actually the Snake River which is in Idaho. Although I think the Snake River also runs into or from Montana. There is a lot of great waterfowl hunting out there and it seems to be really good around the streams.

I hope I find someone to reply that has been out there. I know one guy from PA that went to Montana on a hunt, but it was in the Milk River (eastern end) for whitetail deer. A lot of sports shows are filming waterfowl hunts there due to the great duck hunting.

I've been to Montana about 7 times, but never hunted there. There are geese all over the Yellowstone and the farmers have lots of fields in the Yellowstone valley that would be good places to set-up. Wildfowl had an article awhile back about hunting in Montana too.

I've hunted there a good bit, mostly on the bitterroot and the missouri rivers. It can be super but really weather dependent. Once everything freezes up the spring creeks are loaded. It seems like most of the larger lakes and reservoirs hold thousands of birds but they are mostly rafted up and hard to hunt.
