I can say that reading the posts on here inspired me today to go and buy a Marlin XS7 7mm/08 for my wife(and for me to try too lol). I bought a box of Federal 150gr Speer Hot-Cor SP's at the gun shop. Did I make a wise choice on the shells? Or, is a lighter grain better for PA deer? I figured If we wanted to shoot small bullets, we would have stayed with the .243.
As for the .270, I have shot around 30 deer with mine. But, I am getting tired of the deer going so far after the shot. my buck last year(very large deer) sprinted a full 150 yds down the mountain after I shot him in the lungs. That added at least 30 minutes to my drag right there.
Is there a factory .270 load that will drop a large deer faster? I always used 130gr coreloks and recently switched to 150 Federal Powershoks(last year's deer). Not real happy with either load. I want to drop 'em, like so many of you talk about.

With the 7mm08 you're likely going to have to try a variety of ammo until you find the one that works just right in it. I can tell you from experience that one of mine likes 120gr and the other likes 139gr so if your 150s don't group to your expectations you might want to move down.

IMO, and I stress IMO the 140 Gr bullet is best out of the 7mm-08 for PA Whitetails. I've had real good results with mine. As far as the .270, I've tried several different loads out of the 2 rifles I owned in .270 and experienced just what you are talking about, it kills them but they always seem to run no matter where they are hit. I wouldn't own another .270. I have a friend that shoots nosler partitions out of his .270 and he has great results.

I use 140 cls and have most deer drop in their tracks with the shots going through the lungs/ribs. I accidently gut shot a doe one year and it only went 50 yds. I have no problems. I have in the past seen some relatives with heavy grain cls have deer run a long ways with their 06s.

I noticed the Federals last year didn't expand very much on the buck or the doe I shot. The exit hole was the same as the entry.

I'm all for the 7mm-08 buy the 270 Win is a great caliber and I've killed lots of game with it and they didn't run away.

My 14 year old Grandson shot a 6x6 Bull Elk in Kentucky during their first ever youth hunt in September using a 270 Win with 130 grain Federal Premium bullets and he made a 200 yard shot on it and the bull went 20 yards and laid down at the edge of a thicket.

I've flattened Pronghorn with the .270 150 grain Winchester and Federals. But the only deer I shot with a .270 ran about a hundred yards on me. It was running when I shot it though.

A solid heart or lung shot is going to kill game every time but every animal is going to react differently. Some will drop on the spot, some might make it a few hops and others will go a hundred yards in 5 seconds even though they are dead they just don't know it yet!!
The only way to drop an animal in it's tracks EVERY time is to break the spine or mash the brain.
The bullets you are using are great deer bullets and will kill whenever you do your part. Most times though the animals natural reaction is to RUN and they can cover a lot of ground in a few seconds even though their heart/lungs are like jelly.
