I hate to sound rude but 14 possums that bring $10 comes out to less than .75 cents a piece. I cant justify the time and effort for that kinda coin.

For me, I don't skin'em, wish I didn't have to kill'em, but depending on the trap it may be a necessity, and I look at them just like groundhogs in the garden. They have to go for the sake of bringin in a bigger and better harvest. Don't skin or eat the groundhogs either and they have more than 75 cents of meat on them..

I don't have hoards of possums here. I think most are killed on the roads or the little ones killed by people's dogs, before the season comes in LOL. In fact one of my dogs killed a momma possum and at least 3 still furless kits, this last summer. There were probably more kits but the dogs may have eaten them. Probably got full eating the other dozen kits LOL, that's why they left the 3 mutilated ones laying around.

As to possums getting caught again if you let them go, I caught a huge old female last year down in the meadow. I let her go. A few weeks later I was checking the fox sets in the dark with a big flashlight shined down there and looked for eyes glowing. I saw several pairs of deer eyes LOL ( and these deer didn't step in my traps and fire them off too much either- such polite deer), and 1 pair of greenish eyes down real low and moving slow. I watched these for a while. I figured I would catch whatever it was later that night. But I didn't. It was either that big ol possum or a semi feral cat that has learned to avoid foxy stinking spots. I did not catch the possum again either for the whole rest of the season. I think some possums might actually remember things for a bit LOL.

Skin em and sell em, you only get $2-3 for them but it adds
up if you are getting them often.

Why waste them by just killing them? Skin them

If you catch them and put them down you should use them.

No, not a matter of money at all for me. I make a fine living. It was mentioned earlier in the topic about being able to get 10 dollars for 14 possums. My take on it was that taking those animals home and skinning them was not worth it for me. I dont care for the look or texture of the fur. Based on the math that was laid out earlier in the topic, doesnt seem worth it for me to haul that animal home and skin it if I have no personal use for it and it has very little monetary value. As I understand things, coon fur is worth little at the moment. I will continue to trap them because regardless of their sale value, I will use them for some ideas I have in mind.

Hopefully I have made my standpoint a little more clear oldmink.
