Actually, a week is a long time for a coon trap to be in one location, unless it's full every night. I personally think you have an ideal setup. Trap for a week, get the cream of the local crop, then the next time you set the major dispersal of animals is in full swing. Even a weekend can be productive, especially if you can set Friday and pull Sunday.
My personal opinion is; trap when you can!

Thanks for the reply Bob.
After watching several videos, and reading lots of articles i quickly realized that there is alot more to this than originally thought. I was begining to think i didn't have enough time to do this properly.
Thanks for the encouragement.
I intend on showing you some pics real soon.

For you new trappers, I suggest that you know when and where a fur buyer is located and will be buying fur. Not all buyers will buy unskined this year. You may be surprized that you may have quite a distance to travel to get to a buyer. Good Luck

I might add if selling on the carcass, sell fresh. You do not want to suffer the disappointment of being turned away from the buyer's door with decomposing carcass animals.
Having worked for a fur buyer, I know the pleasures of trying to skin an animal that has lain on a garage floor for 4 or 5 days unless that critter was fully frozen.

In reading posts on this forum, it seems to me that alot of beginners ask lots of questions about what baits to use to catch critters, especially canines. The replies range from sh*& to melba toast and everyone seems to have a miracle bait. If guys believe this, then absolutely more power to them, and have fun preparing all those concoctions of bait. My advice(take it or leave it) to beginners is to focus more on LOCATION, trap bedding,LOCATION,scent consciousness, LOCATION, etc., as opposed to bait. I think you will find that you catch just as many coyotes and foxes on a good lure as anything else. I use lure and/or urine exclusively without messing with jars, jugs, or buckets of bait, and I catch my share of furbearers. If you want to prepare baits, etc., then by all means go right ahead, I'm simply trying to make a point to beginners, or those seeking help or advice that in my opinion there is no miracle concoction, and I think that you'll find that if you make GOOD sets on good LOCATIONS, the critters will be there regardless of what's down the hole. Again just my opinion, but I've seen alot of catch circles in my 40 years of enjoying this hobby.

What your saying is basically Common Scense....
Be on the X and you get different Critters... Step away from the X and you get not a thing!
Set up a deer stand were there is NO Deer Trails..Have a Nice Set in that Stand while you watch no deer come by!
Set up in a wood lot for squirrels were there is NO Feed for them...Basically Zero Chance your going to see any squirrels!
The X refered to in Waterfowling, isn't just for Waterfowlers...It is also for Trappers, Deer hunters, Squirrel hunters and so on!
What your saying should be Common Scense but well sometimes that just doesn't come into play with some folks!

Just wondering how everybody sets there pan tension with out spending $25 for a tool? I will be using 1 1/2 victor dbl coil springs for fox. Just got Dobbins book on trap tuning and didn't find anything in there about it. Seems hit or miss to me.

Take a soda bottle or a Spice container---Plastic...Pour sand in it to get 1.5 pounds...set trap, set bottle or container on pan, litely push down on top of bottle or container, you should not need to put to much pressure on the container setting on the pan to get trap to fire!
if trap fires when you set the 1.5 pound container on the pan, do a little tightening of the nut and screw....if it takes a lot of pressure on the bottle/container to make it fire, back off on the nut and screw a little!

A Use for a #3 trap... Seeing it was mentioned about a #3 being a little to big for use in PA due to a cat on the Stupid Feral cats and also Hunting Dogs...here is something that was posted before and works!
Post Hole Set---- Dig a round hole, just round enough for a #3 to set down in real good...
dig the hole 12 inchs deep, Set #3 trap down at the bottom of the 12 inchs...Place a Trappers cap over pan...Sift dirt in over the trap and Pack real good...Sift and pack the dirt to bring the level of the dirt up to 6 inchs from top...
Take trapper cap out, sift dirt over pan so that it is level with the packed dirt..
Place a good lure right on top of the dirt that has been sifted over the pan.... Set pan tension on the #3 trap at 3-4 pounds...
Fox and Coyotes will Dig to try and find what they think another fox or coyote burried in there....guy who posted this a few years back and others who have said they have used it, have said that normally it is both front feet get caught in the trap!
I have never heard of this but it makes sense... I dont have many places where I could dig 12" without spending a couple hours with all the rocks and junk... but I will have to try this...
