So, All you guys who have been trapping for some years, how about posting again helpfull info for the new folks, like you did last year... pictures of what to look for, pictures of how to set up before hand, anything that you can think of, from Water Trapping to Deep Forest Trapping, Beavers to Possums and Skunks!

I'll start out with this....

JOIN THE PTA! You get a Monthly Magizine called "The Trapper and Peditor Caller" that holds Much information that will help you advance from a New Trapper to an Experianced Trapper, plus you are a member of an organization that Fights for your Rights as a Trapper and also fights for the Trapping Rights of the Yet to be Trappers of the Future!

When walking along a stream , creek or river...look for grass growing along the banks that looks like this...

Notice how the grass lays over the waters edge...when you find something like this, start walking along it and with a stick lift the grass up so you can see under it and the bank..

of which you may find this..

That is were Muskrats are digging for roots in the dirt....

There is more...

see the Rat Droppings?
Also notice where they have exposed the roots and are eating them....

You may also find High Water holes under these Grass Areas...some will be even in the water but Over Looked if you never use a stick and lift up the grass to see under it!

When walking those creeks and streams and come apone walking bridges or vehicle bridges, do not over look them, Set a Bottom Edge Set along the Piers of the Bridge and also if the Bank Drops off Sharply, Set a Bottom Edge in along the Bank for Mink!

Ask experienced trappers( that you know catch critters) for advice and listen to what they have to say(If you want to get any more advice). Most trappers love sharing tips. One newbie near me is always asking me for advice, then argues that what I tell him is different than what he saw on some DVD that he bought(probably filmed in Texas or somewhere).I told him he should definately do what the DVD says and probably buy even more DVD's.

When wireing to a drag or a rock, use wire at two seperate places. Wrap wire around your drag and then a seperate piece to attach chain. Using this method gives you less chance of the wire breaking if you get a big coon.

how can a location be more important than a good lure or a specific set, right!? WRONG and heres why.
if you have a really good lure and a top of the line trap and everytype of set at a bad location you may catcha a few fox. If you have a duke with some cheesecurls( or what ever you want) and a dirthole(or 2) and a scent post at GREAT location you will catch a BUNCH of fox. i have at least one pictureas of this second to show a great location and will take more tomoro of some good and great locations. I ASK that anyone else out there that has pictures of great, good,AND bad locations(preferable places that a beginner would want to set) please post the pics and explanations on why they are what they are
here is the one i have at this second and i will look threw my pictures for more and wll have a few more tomoro.

this is a steel bridge going over a a crick that is about 15 feet across and 2-6 feet deep. this spot would be ever better but there is a tressle on some RR tracks about 100 yards away but its still a great spot. i have that side set because of lss human traffic but i would like to have set both sides of the bridge the left and right. the fox more or less HAVE to cross the bridge to get to the other side of the feilds here. the fields are the yards of houses that use to be here years and years ago that have grown up to long grass and small trees. i hav taken takn 7 fox from here in 2 weeks. and it is a 20 step walk from my truck.
here is a day light veiw of bridge location, notice the field in the back ground Yes thats another red you see in teh circle that makes either 8 or 9 from that spot for the year so far,

wider veiw

other side of the bridge. i am aboyut 75 yards from the road that goes over the bridge. this is where atrail from the tracks you see in the background cmes off teh tracks and dumps into this small field. there is a tressle right out of me on the left of the picture that teh fox also use to cross the crick. there is also a good bit of woods on the other side of the tracks there. my set are on the inside of that bend,

this is a Y in a trail one leg of the Y coming off a ridge and teh other coming out of a crick bottom. so this is a 3 way intersection.

this is a huge power line break that necks down to this small crick crossing, to get acroos teh crick the fox must go past my sets which are in the lower right hand corner of the picture.

this just shows how i can set this huge area and neck it down to a 6 by 6 foot area for my sets.

this is where my first double was. its a road cut threw the woods for access to a sewer line. the raod is behind houses and at this point i am just out of their saftey zones. the raod is pretty wide but at this spot it necks down and the crick is right to teh right of teh road and there is about 75 yards of tall weed Bamboo type weeds to the left of the sets, the sets are by my book bag. foxes traveling this road(good dispersal route) will come down and Should huge the cover which is where my sets are.

hope this helps some of ya that have been having problems

This post i wrote last year during season so just to up date a lil on it... Bridge spot took 30 reds thru teh season i set it the first day and pulled it the last day i trapped. every spot shown took at least 6 reds most took 10 or so. ;D

Do NOT Over look Trash piles that are lumber, old tin cans, carpeting or what ever!

Here is a set I took 5 coons from in 2 weeks of trapping at it.....

You can not see much of what is behind the coon but I'll explain it...

The Land Owner had an old Trailer/Moble Home, the kind you live in....he removed much of things that were of use for him and then drug with a tractor the remaining frame and wood of the trailer down over the hill to his dump he has.... it created a nice little place along side of an old Spring House....I found were there was signs of coon, possums and skunks digging in around the piles of wood and the frame for worms and salamanders, due to the ground staying moist were that trailer was ditched!

I made a small cubby, did not go into much detail in it, just placed 2 pieces of wood to make a V and then placed another piece of wood on top of the 2 that made the V, placed my mix of peanut butter/marshmellows/sardines/fish oil in the back of the V and set a 1.5 Duke at the Entrance....
It worked nice for the 2 weeks I was able to trap in there before Deer Rifle Season!

buy a few Straw Bales, they are cheaper then Hay Bales... set them out long before season and let them get all weathered and also let the critters get to using them as marking posts or if you place them in a wet area, the critters will dig around them for salamanders and frogs....

This season for this straw bale will be season 3...it was set out in July, 3 years ago and left to set and weather, get moldy and be used by the critters for what ever... fox peed and crapped on it, coons and skunks dug around it for salamanders and frogs....
it is still there, much worse for the wear though, but should work just Great this season...I'm planning on placing a new bale in there next july!

Keep it simple. I Go with a couple of good proven lures. Chances are if you're using alot of different lures, etc.,you won't remember which one to relure with, and won't know which one worked. When you find a good location to set a trap, set two. Make you're sets and get out, the critters won't come while you're there. Have fun and learn from your mistakes!

Take a ride or a few rides with an experienced trapper. Ask questions and listen. The group on here has been very patient and willing to help. But nothing can beat the in person training.

Wow..lenittrapper54 thanks for taking the time to post all of those pictures. It was helpful to me. I just started last year and I am content trapping just a small handful of critters each year. If you guys don't mind me asking:

1.) Any tips for making a set to minimize my chances of getting fox and maximize my chances of getting a coyote. I want to save the fox for night hunting.

2.) Where is the best place to shoot a critter. The racoon seem to bleed too much.

3.) I don't have or want a lot of traps. Any suggestions for reusing a trap that I have caught a critter in?

4.) I am scared to let non target furbearers go with my snare pole. Do I just need to man up or is this fear justified?
