Sullivan county camps

I have noticed that most people on here have camps in Potter co. or in nw PA.
Does anyone else have a camp in the Central, Elk Grove, Jamison city area and hunt sgl #13.

I'm not down in that area, but belong to a camp off the Dutch Mt. Rd. between Lopez and Dushore. Most of my hunting is on SGL #13 between Lopez and Nordmount.

My camp is on the Sullivan/Bradford line outside of Dushore. I have been known to wander on to #13 now and then.

Camp life,it don't get much better!

Live 20 minutes from there, venture in off the nordmont winter rd above brass pelican 1 or twice flintlock season and second week if I gotta tag.

Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......

Re: Sullivan county camps

Know the area well. That little piece of heaven was a BEEHIVE back in the day. My Uncles WW11 buddy had a cabin at Elk Grove. Its the first "cabin" memory I have. The old patriarch drank whisky all day and fed the racoons pizza INSIDE the camp! Imagine going to school telling those stories! There were three bars within stumbling distance of all the camps, Cental Hotel, Jamison City, and Elk Grove Inn. My young mind was corrupted for good in that neck of the woods. Now its like a ghost town compared to then, but still a sweet spot!

Re: Sullivan county camps

Used to have a camp in Red Rock area about 10 minutes away. I spent part of my bachelor party at Elk Grove and several deer opener eves at Jamison City...great memories and every year I wish I could go back to those times. But, the camp changed and I moved on, however, I still love going back once or twice a year to get a beer and count pennies on the bar.

Re: Sullivan county camps

I'm a member of a camp in Ringdale, off 220 south of Dushore. Used to spend several weekends a spring using it as a base for trout fishing. In my 25 years of membership it's never been a base for any serious hunting. It's usually closed up by mid October.

I miss my hunting partner

Re: Sullivan county camps

I have to say it's the same struggle every year for me. Do I want to hunt SGL 13 or Loyalsock SF? It's almost like flip a coin to pick the winner.

Re: Sullivan county camps

The deer herd is pretty low on 13. However a group of guys I hunt with started a qdma branch that solely does work on the gamelands. In the last few years we have started planting food plots with help from the PGC. The soil is really poor and we have spent more time and money spreading lime than anything else. We hope to help improve the habitat and the deer herd.

Dead on!
You won't see many deer, but the chance of a whopper or a bear is pretty good.

Re: Sullivan county camps

I hunt SGL 13 all the time. Grew up running around between Dushore and Forksville. Now we hunt around Red Rock, towards Lopez and down towards Jamison City.

Always have breakfast at the Brass Pelican and prime rib dinner at the Central rules.

We still go to Dushore regularly. Take the kids to the Jolly Trolly (used to be Ben Franklin when I was a kid). Have lunch at the Whistle Stop. Get a nice piece of meat to cook for dinner at the Super Duper (Hurley's) and grab a bottle of wine across the street. In the summer, we get ice cream at the little luncheonette. When I was a kid we used to go to the spaghetti dinner at St Basil's Church. Lunch was always at the old Green Swan Inn.

Also camped at Rickett's Glen and World's End. Caught my 1st big bass in the pond across from the Loyalsock Outfitters and probably caught one of the last big muskies out of Lake Jean. 46 incher caught in 1979.

Yep, we're 100% Sullivan County peeps.

Re: Sullivan county camps

Sullivan is full of camps. My parents lived west of Dushore for 10+ yrs. I have to say i didnt like the hunting. All the locals drove and shot at just about everything, or so it sounded. They had bullet holes in the house one year.
We'd take the kids to the trolley and the outhouse races.

Re: Sullivan county camps

Bootoxen - The hunting up by Dushore and the hunting on SGL 13 are night and day. Up by Dushore, there are farms and hunting cabins all over the place. SGL 13 is 54,000 acres of unbroken forest with very little access. You won't hear too much shooting up there. But, like was said before, deer density is low there. You have to work to get your deer. Lots of boot leather.

Re: Sullivan county camps

When I was a kid, we were one of 4 hunting camps that hunted the same 150 acre farm. So, there were a good 30 guys there for buck season. And the farmer above us and the land owners on both sides of us, did drives. So, there was that herd of 30 doe and 1 spike that were bouncing around between hunters all day. It was interesting. Now, we hunt the big woods and don't see any other hunters. The deer don't get bumped either. So, it could be a long, uneventful day.

Re: Sullivan county camps

My dad had a camp near Ricketts Glen (opposite the lane going back to Splash Dam) back in the late sixties/early seventies. I grew up fishing on Lake Jean, hunting SGL 13 and the area around Splash Dam and trapping in the nearby beaver swamps.

Shot my first woodcock and my first deer up there.

Eh...wot?

Re: Sullivan county camps

I used to go up to a cabin in Shunk every year for bear and deer until the owner of the cabin passed away and left it to his son and daughter. Used to be great deer hunting up there 10 years ago on private property that we hunted. Even saw some nice buck the last few years up there hunting bear above butter milk falls.

Sitting here wating on a deer wishing on a star i will always be true to my heart

Re: Sullivan county camps

Our camp is in Elk Grove. First one across the Sullivan county line (Camp Shnee Daal). I'd rather hunt there than here on my farm in Northumberland county. The deer hunting has become pretty tough on sgl 13 but the habitat is starting to show some improvement in certain areas so I think the hunting will gradually improve also. I did get some pics of a few real dandy bucks on my trail cams this year.

Re: Sullivan county camps

I hunted my father In-laws camp in Sullivan for about 15 years. It was toward end of BrownsPond road in cherry twp. Overlooked the pond. I loved hunting there. Seen everything u can think of there except an elk. The wife having a falling out with her father ended that. Fortunate my family has land in Somerset. But I would pick Sullivan any day over anything. Miss seeing all those bear and yotes. Area loaded with turkey too. And some nice bucks. Live it there.

My camp in Sully is a camper at Worlds End State Park. We stay there for bear season. Going up Friday and coming home Monday. We also go there for spring turkey and trout fishing.
