You 54 caliber Flinter guys...whuts your pet hunting load???
In rb's...mine is 80 grains 2fg swiss with a .018 patched .535 rb. Extremely tight & a lil hard to load but almost puts one on top of another at 50 yards. Tried many combinations of .015, .018 etc patches plus .530 roundballs
and the .018 w/.535 roundball is my best roundball/patch combination.
This past month ive been shootin some 295 grain 54 cal Powerbelt Aerotips with same 80 2fg Swiss charge. Same thing at 50...outstanding groups but at 75 yards they group a lil better than rbs and at 100 yds no comparison the powerbelts shoot far better both ballistically & groupwise than the rb. The short stubby 54 cal 295 powerbelt is stabilizing nicely with the 1-56 twist. Did have a few PB fliers though. I will still shoot rbs at the range but thinkin for hunting may go to the powerbelt. I hunt mainly big mtns where many shot opportunities are 50 & sometimes pushin 100 yd range. I'm going to the range today for my final Powerbelt shooting before hittin the woods last week of Late Season. Due to work & family stuff...will be my only time out this years Late Season.
what about the 430 gr maxi-ball? I've read that thy do good.
I've been shooting these out of my T/C Renegade for a few decades now, over 100 grains of 2F....These slugs will penetrate four feet of deer.....It's all I use, and the hole it puts in deer really makes them leak.
