Went Elk shed hunting Friday with a good friend of mine. We were looking in an area we thought might have some Elk near by. My Buddy wanted to take his 12 year old daughter who enjoys the outdoors but she had other things she had to do so we promised to take her on Saturday. After a short while my buddy found a nice elk antler that had been on the ground no more than a day or two. He called his daughter to let her know what he had found and she was upset she wasn't with us. Later that day and several miles of walking I found half a 12 point whitetail shed. Here are the pictures.
The next morning we got an early start and had his daughter Makayla with us. We warned her she might put in a long day of hiking without finding a thing. Oh how we were wrong. Makayla is a shed finding machine. After hiking almost two miles into the heart of the big woods Makayla found her first Elk shed ever.
We celebrated her find and started looking for the other side. It wasn't long Makayla found another shed.
Her Dad found a nice heavy antler later to make three for the day while I looked on. Here is a picture of him and Makayla together with her first one and the heavy one he found.
We sat down, ate some lunch and talked about how we never have found any old sheds that have been out there for years and what happens to them. Well after lunch we found out. While walking through heavy laurel my buddy found this old shed that had to be there at least three years.
Once again I looked on. We were usually all within a hundred yards of each other but sometimes you just miss it by a little. On the way out of the big woods Makayla called out she thought she found another one. Sure enough she did. We all walked by it on the way in but she spotted it on the way out. It was leaning against a dead tree as if someone had stood it there. It also had been there for at least a year.
Here are some pictures of all the sheds from that day.
This was the best day I have had looking for sheds. Even though I didn't find any for myself I was there when Makayla found her first Elk antler. Oh yea and her second and then her third. Way to go kid!
