Savage 17 hmr won't eject shells.......

Took my 17 to the range today and it is not ejecting the shells. doesn't matter if they are full or empty. I have to take them out with my nail or a knife....

Only thing I can thing of is maybe some factory gunk in there.... I did not clean it 1st.

Thoughts or suggestions on a fix for it?

Bolt action gun that I won a year ago and today is the 1st time I shot it

Re: Savage 17 hmr won't eject shells.......

Tell me if these pics look right.... I'm not sure if it should hold the (empty) bullet with the bolt out or not. Its almost like its not machined down enough?!?!

figured I'd check my Marlin 22N but its different

Re: Savage 17 hmr won't eject shells.......

Its tough to tell just by looking. If its any help the rim thickness of the cartridge( head clearance) per spec is .044"-.050". IIRC of those I've measured ran in the .046" range. Headspace per spec is .050"-.056".

To figure out whats wrong you would need to measure the boltface depth, the cartridge rim thickness and extractor to boltface length. Its very possible it could be that lot of brass. Since the extractors won't engage the rim you can eliminate any chamber issues at this point.

Without those measurements its only a best WAG what the problem is. Failing all else call Savage service.

That looks like the bolt face on a Savage. I say that because it looks exactly like mine - except that on my rifles bolt the extractors have much more clearance from the surface of the bolt face allowing a seated round to be held firmly in place. I would suggest that the problem is that something is very much out of spec. I could be the extractors themselves or the bolt face or even the milling of the extractor channels and placment of the extractor retention collar. I would not mess with this as a face full of scrap because of incorrect headspace is not worth it. Call Savage.

See if it will eject a shell without the clip in. I had issues with mine when they were brand new 10 years ago, the clip was not machined properly, would mess up the correct geometry for ejection when installed.

Yeah, the "clip", chamber, headspace or any other dartboard guesses have nothing to do with this problem.

Just be careful dig'm out with a knife. Nick up the the chamber mouth then next you'll be begging to borrow my chamber swagging tool!

I got the same exact one its your ejector arms sorry not sure of the real term. (its the 2 arms that graps the edge of the shell they should be sticking out and up farther! Im actually leaving to go on a fishing trip early in the morning and wont be home for a week. But ill take some pics of mine when i get home, and help you out when i get back if someone else already hasnt. Take it to a gun smith and show him he will know instantly. Good luck

Fishing, Turkey Hunting, Shed Hunting, Archery Hunting yep that's it!
