Re: hay set- how to make

ON the X, were they travel... That is were I have caught all my Fox with the hay set but FTW and others may suggest other places.

I have only caught 1 fox off the X in a Hay set, but the outcome of the hay set is for the Fox to see it or smell it........

Play the Wind and you may not have a problem!

Just Hope you don't get a Wise Fox that likes to take a Dump in the Middle of the hay and know how to avoid the trap! They can be alittle on the hard side to catch!

Re: hay set- how to make

I have caught some of my piddally foxes this season with old hay, making those quick and easy 1 trap sets with a dirthole, using the hay to lightly cover the trap in front on the hole and scatter some about. I caught a # last season same way, totally sloppy LOL. Hay is hay in my opinion. The finer the grass type the better.

Re: hay set- how to make

I got a sweet skunk in a hay set last night and my hands still smell of it even though I wore gloves...

Remade the set hoping a k9 will visit it now that it has PLENTY of scent AND great eye appeal!

Timothy Hay Smells far more like hay to me then regular Orchard Grass/clover/timothy!

If I can get it, I'll take Timothy over any of the other kind because of the smell!

From Reading FTW's posts over the past few years now on this Subject, She has pretty much said the result of the hay is Smell of HAY, Sight of Hay and then the smell of the lure.....Equals making Fox think of an easy Mouse meal because they are used to finding Mice under Hay Bails....

With that, the Smellier of Hay that can be gotten, the BETTER!

Re: hay set- how to make

I have been wanting to try a hay set now for some time. But I have never done it before so I am a little leary. How do ya'll think they would work were there isn't a very big population of animals. Also I don't have much farmland to trap (I don't know if it makes a difference). Also I have been catching more yotes than anything. What do ya'll think.

Re: hay set- how to make

I was wondering how you bed the traps when there is snow? Do you just set it on the snow or some hay? I was worried about it freezing down.
